Personal Philosophy of Nursing Nursing is a multi-dimensional area of care that involves different areas of practice. Each area of practice may focus on an aspect of a patient’s health or a body system. Examples of the available clinical areas include psychiatry, emergency, oncology, medical /surgical, trauma, and critical care. While I was working in the hospital, my clinical area of specialty was the Coronary Care Unit (CCU). This area focuses on the care of a critically-ill patient with heart issues such as myocardial infraction, endocarditis and heart-failure and patient’s response to treatments. This is in congruent with Berg and Sarvimaki (2003) view of nursing which states, “a holistic existential perspective that focuses on an individual’s ‘being-in-the-world and on the experience and understanding of their life” (pg. 385). The wellbeing of an individual includes the physical, emotional and spiritual aspect of health and these should all connected to ensure that nursing is appropriately practiced. Travelbee (as cited in Berg and Sarvimaki, 2003) states that man is also accountable for their “choices, decisions and actions” (pg. 386). Man can decide and think on their own while possibly making a logical or illogical decision. This applies to a patient is in the hospital, who must decide on the course of treatment after multiple choices are presented by the interdisciplinary team. No matter what option the patient pick, we, the nursing team will abide by it because we know that in general, patients can think on their own and these thoughts are being influence by either their culture or
