Personal Narrative: My Transition In High School

Until middle school I would have been described as introverted, but all this changed during the beginning of my high school transition. During the summer break before I started high school, my mother found a summer project for me. She asked me to tutor a child who had recently been diagnosed with a learning disability and had failed math and reading at grade 3. I had some fun plans for the summer. But my mother thought I could be more resourceful by spending two hours every week with this kid and learn a lot from the experience. I was a bit annoyed with this summer project thrust upon me and failed to understand how I would gain anything from this arrangement. I felt that I did not have the right skills or understanding to help him. My mother however believed that if I showed empathy towards this child then I would be able to help him in his learning.

I resolved to try again with sincerity. The following day I just gathered enough courage and called up Jake’s mother to find out about Jake’s interests and dislikes. During the quick conversation I learned that Jake liked mystery books and superhero comics. When I met with him again a week later, I had brought along a couple of easy to read comics and mystery chapter books. Our second tutoring session was far more successful and from there on we began to bond. I felt as I was teaching him math and reading, and he was teaching me larger life lessons, like empathy, patience and above all being genuine, and these lessons I would carry for the rest of my life. As the days went by, we both gained confidence and trust in each other. Spending two hours every Friday with Jake became a source of joy for me since he brought such incredible positive energy in me.
