On a constant basis in my case, my passion has been the pursuit of social justice I was able to demonstrate my leadership skills to prove that to be a leader one needs to believe in oneself and one’s passion. My work with various diverse communities and vulnerable populations in New York City has shaped my values and how I aspire for a just world for others and how the government’s action can have an impact on people. My traditional ethnic background combined with my current American life experience from a working class perspective always has permitted me to understand on a daily basis the impact policy creation can have on people from all spectrums including race, gender, and ethnic background. I have listened to the students during their crisis, during times their needs were addressed. But the test of leadership skills took place when the tuition hike was going to take place at CUNY in 2016. I had to be well organized to represent the majority of my student's needs at John Jay College and other colleges in the CUNY system. During that time I met with elected officials, CUNY trustees, testified at the New York City Council, and Albany at the state capital in New York to advocate for the students. As a leader, I spoke to the students who are undocumented and attend to CUNY due to its affordability. By supporting my arguments stating how the majority of CUNY students relies on financial aid and the proposed increase in tuition would only put their education in jeopardy. It would impact their future because the key to getting out of poverty is education. With motivation, organization, and my independence as a leader I was able to succeed in being the leader my fellow peers wanted.
