Leading and Following Across Difference Scenario One: I was a leader and had at least one follower who was different from you in some important or salient way. It is human nature for there to be a difference in opinion whenever two are more parties are engaged in conversation or discussion. The manner in which people express their opinion varies from person to person and there is a fine line between being abusive/abrasive and having a strong opinion. More often than not we meet people that are not able to objectively defend their positions on a matter and their rhetoric degenerates into an unconstructive exchange of words or passive aggression. As a leader, I have worked with different people, who expressed themselves in their own unique way but in all my years as a team leader, there is an individual who worked under me that stood out. Part of the study culture in college is forming discussion groups. The most common criteria of group formation is selecting group members that are personal friends. After a couple of months of “Self-development”, I decide to try the club and societies thing again and joined a club that related to my interest. However, this time around I was not interested in low level role. I consciously and subconsciously decided that being the guy that does things for no credit was not something I was going to go through again. I was confident in my skills, but I was not assigned tasks that exactly matched what I was offering, so I kept my head down and became a passive club member. What I mostly liked about the club was how casually it was structured compared to the previous ones I had joined.
