Personal Narrative: I M A Good Writer

Sherman Alexie once said “I’m a good writer who may be a great writer one day.” This quote is an excellent explanation about how I feel toward my own writing. Reading and writing has always been a part of school that I have enjoyed since I first learned how to. Usually, I enjoy reading to a further extent than writing; in spite of this, only under certain circumstances, do I enjoy reading. If a teacher were to assign a book to read for a class, I would find it difficult to read and appreciate, because I did not find or choose the book myself. Writing, on the other hand, has never been a favorite of mine; although, I would consider myself to be a fairly strong writer. I would easily choose reading over writing. Reading has been relatively painless for me, I remember always wanting to read when I first learned how, in the same way that teenagers want to drive everywhere when they first receive their license. One series I remember reading was called The Tucket Adventures, a book series by Gary Paulson. It is based around a fourteen-year-old boy who is captured by a tribe of Pawnee Indians. Reading introduced me to a whole new world of opinions and new ideas that I never would have thought of, and literature has been doing this since humans have been writing. Frederick Douglass once stated that he “… always took a book with me, and by doing one part of my errand quickly, I found time to get a lesson before my return.” That is the exceptional part about literature, everyone can learn how to read and write, unlike other activities, such as Football or Baseball, which takes a certain level of athleticism to play at a competitive level.
