To start, paint is a substance used to both protect and add color to any given surface. Now don’t be fooled and think paint is made up of one thing, because in reality, paint is actually made from a mixture of substances which form a colloid. A colloid is a mixture of substances where the particles mix and disperse, but do not dissolve. These particles don’t dissolve because they all share a similar charge, whether it be positive or negative, that makes them constantly repel each other. In terms of paint, each of three substances that make up the colloid each have an important part in carrying out the job of paint. The three substances inside of paint are the pigment, solvent, and the binding medium. To make is simple, pigments are the color part of the paint. In a little bit more depth, the pigment is the compound that protects the surface and colors the overall mixture. Pigments are also insoluble solids that are ground very finely. These pigments have the ability to be broken down into two different groups, organic and inorganic pigments. Lets take a look at organic pigments first. The main thing that makes an organic pigment any different is the fact that it has Carbon. Organic pigments are generally more transparent than inorganic, but with the use of manufacturing available to us, they are able to be made with a greater opacity, or thickness of a color. Because of this slight transparency, organic pigments tend to give off a brighter tone as apposed to the very thick inorganic colors. With these properties, organic pigments tend to be used in paint and printing paper. One example of an organic pigment is the Azo pigment group. Basic organic pigments consist of carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms. The Azo compounds are just that... ... middle of paper ... ...ot or not before trying to touch it, or it could even just be a cool pencil for the purpose of kids to play with and learn a thing or two about science. Another very common pigment found if you take a look around you is the pigment inside plants and living things. Did you ever wonder how plants get their energy? Or possibly even how plants and the things around you get their color? Well the answer is pigments. Most plants contain the pigment called chlorophyll. This pigment is a plant’s main source of energy due to its ability to absorb energy. The chlorophyll absorbs the sun’s energy from the Red (long) wavelengths and also even the Blue (short) wavelengths. Now what most people misunderstand is that chlorophyll does not actually absorb green. That is why the plants are green, they reflect green in the color spectrum rather than absorb it. –Kirk Phillips
