One of the worst things teachers can do about bullying is ignore it. If they do nothing, the bullying will increase because the bully can get away with it. This gives the bully more control, because they know they will suffer no consequences. This creates a problem, because the bullying will continue and more bullying possibly will arise. Teachers never should ignore bullying, and if they do not know what to do about it they should ask other teachers, the principal, or get help in some other way. Teachers are less likely to intervene if it is social/verbal bullying rather than physical (Li, 2007). This is a problem because social bullying can be much more harmful than physical, and can easily go unnoticed by the teachers. They can do things like show the students videos about bullying, or even have them put on a play. (Concordia University, 2012). If the students are educated about bullying, they will realize when it is taking place and know how to stop or prevent it. It is also helpful to teach kids not to bully, but since that does not always work it is best to have all the kids educated on how to deal with a bullying situation. Another helpful thing that teachers can do is create a safe and supportive environment. They can teach the students to be accepting of everyone and encourage them to let the teachers know if a bullying incident occurs (Concordia University, 2012). If the students know they are safe and will get support, they are more likely to come out about bullying that has occurred.
