Bullying is High in Obese Children
Bullying has become an epidemic that is life-threatening, destabilizing the peace and harmony that is well-known in our world. What is hurting most is the fact that young children are the victims of this heinous act just because they are obese. The rates of children with obesity have increased in the whole world with US leading at an alarming rate (US News & World Report.).In United States Obesity has been recorded high in families that have low incomes such as African American families among other families.
Many children out there have found themselves being subjected to cyber bullying or sexual bullying just because they are obese. Bullying is happening to many kids irrespective of race, social skills, academic …show more content…

Direct bullying involves calling names, confrontations, hitting, using derogatory terms, kicking, shoving and chasing. Indirect bullying though is hidden from the victim is aggressive and involves spreading of lies and rumors to colleagues, social isolation, and ignoring victims in group activities. Also, cyber bullying can be categorized as indirect because bullying and harassment are a step that removes face to face contact using social media and a text message (Seeman, N., and Luciani, P.).
Consequences of bullying are so devastating to the children and also to their parents. Children’s who are subjected to bullying avoid playground or school and thus decreases the quality of recreation experiences and education(Obesityaction.org).increased risks of mental health problems, type two diabetes in later life Other children decide to commit suicide or think of committing suicide. Also, parents can encourage their children to learn to stand on their own and defend themselves from those bullying them, encouraging children to stay firm and calm and look the bullies in the eyes and stand tall. Children can also be taught to ask help from the adults around them (Davies, Fitzgerald, and Mousouli). Besides, children can be encouraged to join groups at school or organization, enrolling them in martial arts classes to build their confidence and also teach them to defend themselves from the bullies. The parents should make the appointment with the school principal and teachers who teach your child and report the bullying so that the whole team can help address the issue. Parents can also enquire about the school policies on bullying as well as any available resources that can help the child and the parent (Seeman, N and Luciani, P.)
Schools can help combat bullying by coming with suitable policies that does not favor thriving of this heinous act. The school should come up with the ethos that helps to stop the act from happening in the first place. Where the act of bullying has occurred, the schools should have the necessary support of counseling the victims.
