Lisa Miller uses the Bible as a basis for her argument for gay marriage in her essay "Our Mutual Joy: The Religious Case for Gay Marriage". She first begins her argument by saying that neither the Old Testament nor the New Testament show model examples for marriage. Therefore, neither a homosexual or heterosexual couple would want to look to the Bible for marriage advice. Instead, the Bible should be read for its universal truths. Miller goes onto say that there is no real definition of marriage in the Bible, and the laws and guidelines in the Bible were put in place for a culture that no longer exists. If Christians no longer subscribe to animal sacrifice, then why would they condemn homosexuality? She ends by discussing the fact that Jesus ' message was one of inclusion. So, all those who claim to follow the Bible 's teachings should love others regardless of their sexual orientation. Miller analyzed scriptures that I have read a thousand times as a promotion for gay marriage; never once did I interpret them in that context. I found holes in many of these argument and I found myself disagreeing with her point of view. Although, I did find her essay to be interesting and enlightening. It is important to see the world through …show more content…
The flaw that is made hear is the assumption that the reader views the Bible as uninspired by God. Actually, many Christian denominations view the Bible as the inspired word of God. God used imperfect people to create the Bible. Consequently, the previous verse from Genesis is God 's definition of marriage even if the person who wrote those words did not practice
Stoddard uses many successful techniques to support his major claim that gay marriage should be made legal. He misuses a few techniques, but overall his paper was a success. He keeps his argument strong through emotional appeal, strong evidence, use of authority, and great warrants.
In the essay “Why The M Word Matters To Me” by Andrew Sullivan, he states “This isn’t about gay marriage. It’s about marriage. It’s about family. It’s about love” (159). A student’s response to this statement made by Sullivan prompted him to claim that Sullivan was not speaking about marriage itself - as a concept, more rather weddings in particular within his essay. I fully agree with this student’s response and as a result, I shall be thoroughly analyzing the validity of his claim outright.
God has declared through His loving kindness and His righteousness how He enjoys heterosexual relationships, as Creator of man and woman. God created a woman from Adam’s rib so that Adam would not be alone. Upon completion of God creating woman, God asked Adam to name her; Adam declared she would be called woman as she was created with man’s rib, but her name will be Eve as she is the first woman. Therefore, that pleased God, and we have the first marriage. A marriage where to people man and woman come together. They were creatively designed by God to fit each other. God did not create man to lay with another man, as their bodies are not designed to fit or complement each other. Adam was given instructions from God not to eat from the tree of knowledge and as head of the marriage; it was his responsibility to enforce God’s command. Yet he failed and ate with Eve from the tree. And later that day, as God was walking in the garden in the coolness of the day, He called out to Adam. Adam and Eve were hiding from Him, as they knew they blew it. When God questioned Adam why did he eat from the tree, Adam blamed Eve. God is fair and just and He loves us all. Even when they had sinned against God, God loved them and clothed them with animal skins. In order for Him to provide the animal skins, He had to kill the animal.
... to agree on the fact that the issue at hand is one of religion. Religion seems to be the deciding factor right now when it comes to the question of what is right and what is wrong. Both authors see religion as the main concern when the question of homosexual marriage is brought up. So as each has very different ideals for society as a whole, both Bennett and Sullivan try to represent the happiness of the people as a whole, in their own ways. The two authors present very different points of view and each has well thought out reasoning behind what he has to say. Although the authors feel very different about how marriage should exist and how it should be regulated, there is some common ground between the authors.
Sullivan?s article is an inductive argument directed at persuading and perhaps even educating all people on why gay marriage should be allowed in the United States. Throughout the essay, Sullivan uses multiple techniques, including Pathos, Ethos, Logos, and even Mythos to squarely support his argument, all of which help to aid in the credibility of the topic. Sullivan?s argument, while generally successful, has some weak points.
What is marriage? For thousands years, marriage has been a combination between a man and a woman. When they love each other, they decide to live together. That is marriage. But what will love happen between two same sex persons? Will they marry? Is their marriage acceptable? It is the argument between two authors: William J. Bennett and Andrew Sullivan. The two authors come from different countries and have different opinion about same sex marriage. Sullivan agrees with the gay marriage because of human right, on the other hand, Bennett contradicts his idea because he believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Even though their theories are totally different, their opinions are very well established.
The disagreement for being against same-sex marriage comes from it being a sin in some point of views and dishonors the true meaning of marriage. These kind of people that worry about what others are into and try to manipulate others are just irritating. If someone wants to perform a sin, let them sin without a headache. Out of all the disagreements in the book Justice, this one is the most mindboggling. Sometimes, we need to keep our noses out of other people’s
According to biblical texts, in the beginning, God created the first man, Adam and made him a woman, Eve. He gave Adam a woman, not a man, so that the human race can maintain a man/woman relationship. For thousands of years homosexuality has been misconduct or in the church’s case, sin. We are continuously beset with this controversial topic and have since reached a point where homosexuality is more open and more accepted than ever. Now, gay men and women fight for the right to be legally married in the United States. In Christianity, marriage is a lifelong commitment under God and many Christians believe this is a “major sin.” However, no matter the relation of man and woman or man and man, Homosexuals should be allowed to have a lifelong
Beginning with the topic on gay marriage and the controversial battle between authors, Andrew Sullivan and William Bennett, Sullivan is the gay supporter. In Sullivan’s piece, “Let Gays Marry,” he opens with a statement by the Supreme Court, “A state cannot deem a class of persons a stranger to its laws.” He feels that this simple sentence has so much meaning, saying that whatever type of person, male or female, black or white, everyone deserves the same legal protection and equal rights. Therefore, gay marriage should not be excluded from the legal system. He tells that some churches practice different beliefs and may oppose gay marriage but religion has nothing to do with the state appeals. Sullivan explains how the definition of marriage has changed in the past and that it can be done again. Sullivan ends his piece by saying that changing the law would not affect straight couples, so why are they against gay marriage? He believes the change would allow gay couples to experience what straight couples already have.
James Dobson, a famous evangelist, talks about the prior supreme court decision to legalize gay marriage. Before the announcement that that the supreme court did legalize gay marriage -- there was an uproar from evangelicals like James Dobson who said “gay marriage will undermine the family,” and that “it will further divide our country up.” In this video, Dobson asks the question “ how are parents supposed to teach their children about what the bible says in this issue [ marriage and the definition of it ] and then go on to a school bus and be taught something different by their elders?” Dobson describes gay marriage as “ the death knell of religious liberty in the United States.” Throughout this video, Dobson uses his opinion based on his religion to make the assertions he is
However, he does not approach this in an unbiased manner, he leaves out arguments that oppose his point of view, which are critical for him to view in order for his argument to be more powerful. At no point does he speak of religious standpoint. He fails to acknowledge why the family did not want one woman to see the other. Until you have all of the facts, you do not know if the author is just trying to manipulate and simply push his opinion onto you. I agree that people should be able to chose who they marry. I also feel everyone has the right to marry, whether they are straight or gay. Yet making this into an
The United States is a country built on a number of ideals and institutions. The moral structure of many Americans today was developed by our ancestors and the founders of this nation through the institutions that were a part of their lives. Family, religion, marriage, equality, and justice are just a few examples of the important components that provide a moral basis for our country. If any of these elements were to become too mutated, the effects on society could be devastating. Right now in the United States, one of these building blocks of society is being threatened by the possibility of a negative transformation. The building block of marriage as the sacred joining of one man and one woman is under attack and is at risk of being destroyed. People in favor of gay marriage want to change marriage to the joining of two people of either sex, which goes against what the purpose of marriage has been and why it is important to society and religion. People who are in opposition to same-sex marriage are eagerly expressing their opinions with religious and cultural reasons that show how this change could impact our society forever.
The American debate on homosexuality reveals an unquestionable, though awfully uninvited, fusion between religion and politics, revealing a dangerous lack of separation between the church and state. The concern is not about the presence of spirituality in American politics, but the implications institutionalized religion has on the lives and rights of human beings. Nothing hinders the political and social progress of lesbian women and gay men quite like the complexities of religion. Dating back to the beginning of literature itself, homosexuality is far from modern. Nonetheless, homosexuality is currently the most divisive and fiercely debated topic in recent religious discourse. While most Christians maintain allegiance in labeling same-sex relationships as morally wrong, the church is dramatically divided on the proper place for gays and lesbians in American society and of course, American politics.
As Dr. Rae eluded to in his lecture, the biblical definition of marriage found in Genesis chapters one and two, is when one man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to one woman, becoming one flesh. A hermeneutical study of Genesis 1 and 2 along with the rest of Scripture, will show that it is God’s intention for procreation and sexual relationships to be between a man and a woman and within the confines of the marriage relationship.
On February 27, 2014 Daily News published an article on their web page called: Five arguments against gay marriage. In the article, author Seth Forman states his opinion on gay marriage. Forman says in the opening of the article “Putting gay unions on a legal par with heterosexual ones may radically alter our culture.” Forman then continues to provide his readers with five points explaining his position on the topic. His first statement is on religious freedom, this one of the main arguments against gay rights. The bible does not mention homosexuality specifically but it is evident that it is condemned. A passage in the Book of Leviticus identifies homosexuality as an abomination, and a detestable sin. Romans1:26-27 describes homosexual desires to be shameful. The bible also describes marriage and that it is to be between a man and a woman. Genesis 2:24:"Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh." Forman quotes opponents in a Newsday editorial saying opponents “will be seen by future generations in much the same light as those who opposed school desegregation.” Forman’s second concern is the rights of children. He st...
