High school provides the formation for not only education, but for personal growth. Open campus lunch is basically the ability to leave school property during the lunch period. Statistics show that “nearly 1 in 3 high schools are allowing open campus during lunch” (Mieszkowski, “Open-campus policy eats away at school nutrition effort”). Allowing students to leave the campus for lunch can also provide a few benefits. A few of those benefits include: healthier food options, a break from all the classes and teachers, and it puts trust and responsibility on the students to return to class after. Many faculty members are opposed to idea of an open campus lunch system arguing that students do not deserve that kind of trustworthiness. I on the other hand fully agree that more schools should look into allowing off campus lunch schedules because it can teach the students life lessons they will have to face outside of high school. I feel that experiences outside of the classroom can play as big of roll as those inside of the classroom. …show more content…

Allowing students to leave school means they may even have the option to go to a restaurant quickly. For example, students could run to Subway and get a fresh sandwich instead eating food that’s been sitting in their locker for a few hours or the unhealthy food served in the cafeteria line day after day. By going to a restaurant nearby the school, it helps put students in situations out in the real world. The fortunate students who live nearby the campus also have the opportunity to have fresh healthy options right at home. Specialty delis located in stores close by may even have premade types of healthy food for students to go and buy.
