The purpose if this discussion is to define and understand nursing research, appropriate research and clinical questions, and evidence-based practice with support of examples and clinical scenarios. Nursing research refers to the identification, investigation, and critical analysis of matters or questions pertaining to the profession of nursing through a scientific and methodical process (Wood & Haber, 2013). The purpose of research is to gain new knowledge or validate current knowledge, and a research question should indicate an area, have an impact in nursing, reflect previous literature, and can be researched with a quality or quantity approach (Wood & Haber, 2013). A clinical question refers to a question that is usually brought up during practice, and leads to a nurse or healthcare working searching for studies that have already validated a best practice model or answer to the question. For instance, does placing patients in isolation while results for multi drug resistant organisms (MDRO’s) are pending decrease transmission? A clinical question consists of four part that include population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (Wood & Haber, 2013). This would prompt the nurse to review studies and gather evidence for the best practice of insulin administration in an acute care setting. These types of questions lead to the need to understand evidence-based practice. It is the application of clinical practices that have been validated as the best methods to implement through compilation and analysis of credible research while incorporating experience, existing knowledge, and the values of the population to be supplied for clinical decision-making (Wood & Haber,
