In this reflective analysis paper, I will discuss and analyze about my experience with a language-barrier patient that enhanced my learning in nursing practice. My clinical instructor assigned me to Mrs. Lee, who can only speak Cantonese. My experience with Mrs. Lee made me realize that language barrier clients are vulnerable for inadequate nursing care due to communication difficulties. I will link the ineffective communication experience with my client to culture and hierarchy context. Newman’s theory and Ethical practice.

Doane & Varcoe (2015) supports the relation of culture and context during nursing care, “Contexts gives rise to culture and culture shapes contexts”, (p. 153). This connects to Margaret Newman’s theory as expanding consciousness, in which she states “health and illness are not at two different ends but are integrally related in the process of life” (Doane & Varcoe, 2015, p. 291). She additionally supports her statement by stating that instead of viewing problematic situations as problems to be fixed, it should be viewed as opportunities to expand knowledge. The above relations increases our knowledge and understanding of people and the ability to make effective decisions when intervening and providing patient care. Therefore, my proposition in gender stereotype from the above story led me to contemplate about Mrs. Lee’s possible perspective of Nursing being a female dominant profession. In addition, Mrs. Lee’s comfort and ability to cope effectively with a female primary nurse in comparison to a male nursing student. On the other hand, the primary nurse obviously is more superior in nursing practice comparing to a student nurse. Therefore, a client would definitely feel more comfortable with an experienced nurse than a student nurse. In this approach, culture and context works together by exposing gender stereotype.
