While you might think something you do is right and ethical, while another person might find it wrong and unethical, or vice versa. This can make communication more of a challenge or impossible. One way to eliminate this problem is to try to be more understanding to someone’s background, to put yourself into their shoes and to understand that everyone has different backgrounds and different ways of perceiving what is right and wrong. Various generic cultural issues may occur at each phase of psychotherapy, and specific cultural knowledge guides their resolution. Counselors need to be aware that they are able to work with particular issues and certain cultural groups. This is because conscious and unconscious meanings and assumptions, such as strongly held religious or political beliefs, will be communicated to the client. “It is desirable up to a point to know about a particulars clients background and therefore not to ask questions about it” due to the clients may be frustrated and impatient with this use of their time. (Bayne, Jinks, Collard, Horton, 2008).
People want to use acceptable assumptions to obtain other people’s understanding in order to achieve their goals of communication. When communicating with people from different cultures, people tend to interpret the other people’s language and behavior by using generalized culture. Generalized culture, which represents beliefs of the majority within one culture, helps people make appropriate assumptions of the culture. However, ignoring individual differences may cause stereotype, which could bring different intensities of prejudice such as misunderstanding, discrimination and massacre. Therefore, people need to drop stereotype and build a multicultural perspective by accepting and learning other cultures in order to achieve effective communication.
Instead of assuming that someone is rude because they are blunt, I can better understand that someone's directness or indirectness is rooted from the traditions of their culture. Two people from two different cultures, may have a hard time communicating if they aren't able to pick up the context around what's being said. Two of same messages can be said completely different, depending on the context of communication, and from this, I learned that it is important for me to focus more on the message than how the message is said. In the future, I can use this experience to prevent myself from judging people before I know their background. After learning more about Jerrad and the people of Barbados, I had a much better understanding of who he was and why he acts the way he does.

For instance, a therapist must become aware of the sociopolitical dynamics that form not only their clients’ views, but their own as well. Racial and cultural dynamics may interfere into the helping process and cause misdiagnosis, confusion, pain and reinforcement of biases and prejudices towards their client. Although, even if the therapist is from the same cultural background this can still be hard to counsel these clients because of different traditions, language dialects, family values, and ancestry. This does not mean that the therapist cannot help these clients, but this could hinder the therapist and client relationship if brought up in an entire different environment. For instance, you can have two individuals from the same cultural background and family values, but these individuals live in an entirely different environment or learned different family values and belief system.
Cultural and ethical relativism can often be thought to share the exact same beliefs and be one and the same, but they actually have differences. As taught in lecture, Cultural relativism is when people try and understand and become involved with other cultures that are not their own and do not use their own cultures as the norm. People are free to still have their own opinions that come from their own culture, but they attempt to better relate to those of other cultures and figure out the “why” behind the rituals, beliefs, and values of others. They believe that the ways people behave and perceive others is relative to their culture and cannot be understood without taking their culture into account. Cultural awareness is being aware of our perspectives, beliefs, and values. People see and assess things in diverse ways. It is important when we interact with people from different cultures. Being culturally aware allows us to be open when connecting with others. The purpose of cultural awareness is to step back from your own point of views and look at others in an enlightened way.
Firstly, in the areas of decreasing stereotypes, focusing on the individual and having an open-minded attitude to receive the uniqueness of different cultures may be beneficial to avoid stereotype. (Agius & Ambrosewicz, 2003, p. 34) As stereotypes are the unreasonable overgeneralizations of all members in one certain group, concentrating on the uniqueness of each individual might be helpful for people who stereotype others to recognize their misleading conception and to respect each individual of the stereotyped group. Additionally, being willing to learn more about the culture and beliefs of people from different societies or different groups is considered as an appropriate solution as well.
