1. How will you contribute to the mission of the NURSE Corps Scholarship Program in providing care to underserved communities? Born in a developing African country where the health care delivery system is generally less than ideal, I have had a first-hand experience of the healthcare disparities that often characterize underserved communities. There is a remarkable irony that comes to light in most underserved communities, and that is that most major causes of diseases are either preventable or treatable with basic health care delivery. I find the most pressing problem of such communities is that of public enlightenment. I will make it my priority to devise a public enlightenment program that would not simply go into preventive health care but also enlighten the public about government programs that improves the people’s healthcare. When I was a patient at the hospital, I came in contact with nurses that left an indelible impression in my mind. And I feel it made a difference in my healing process as they nurtured me back to wellness. This is what I intend to repeat with the patients I come in contact with, by giving the best care to my patients. My prior experience as a certified nurse assistant provided an opportunity to care for patients although not on the level of fulfillment I expect as a registered nurse. However, I believe I gave all the patients that I came in contact with the best care possible despite my limited scope of practice as a nurse assistant.
