Writer and speaker Jo Franz once said, “Take a limitation and turn it into an opportunity. Take an opportunity and turn it into an adventure by dreaming BIG! (Goodreads.com)”. I feel that this quote hits close to home for a lot of people when we think about going to college. The dreams that people have almost always include getting into college and being successful, and nowadays, applying to college is a vicious competition of impressing colleges. In Fall of 2013, UCLA had a total of 80,522 applicants from around the world and was the most applied to school of 2013. Of those 80,522 people, only 17%,16,448, were admitted (admissions.ucla.edu). This shows how competitive college admissions really are and stresses the importance of having an excellent college resume. Standing out when applying to college can be a difficult task among the masses of applicants, but can be made much easier when one knows what schools are looking for. Colleges want hard working, bright students to attend their school (Tanabe). They would much rather have someone who, throughout high school, challenged themselves with honors and AP courses (if available), and showed dedication and effort, even if the grades earned weren’t straight A’s (Suber). They don’t want to see someone who took the easy road and took classes just to boost their GPA (Suber). Therefore, it is extremely important to choose challenging classes during high school because it allows colleges to evaluate a student’s performance and shows them that a student has what it takes to attend their school. (Tanabe). Some colleges may ask for AP or IB test scores and it is a good idea to send it to them. As well as seeing AP test scores, some colleges also want to see how well a student may have ... ... middle of paper ... ...’m beginning to think about what my future will be like and what I want to do as an adult. I’m wondering which career path I want to choose, and which college I want to attend. But choosing a college is much easier said than done. I’m pretty nervous about getting into college because even though I know that I have the brains to succeed academically, conveying my abilities, talents, and personality in the short space of a college application is a struggle and is what will give me a chance of getting accepted. A student must know how to write a college application that maximises their strengths while minimizing their weaknesses but also should have decent grades, be a reasonably hard worker, be willing to challenge themselves academically, and not bomb the ACT/SAT. If they (and I!) can follow those simple guidelines, they have what it takes to get into a great school.
