My Reflection On Leadership And The Path Of Leadership

As I reflect on this class, I am reminded of why I chose the path of leadership to begin with. I remember as a young child I wanted to be in the business world, yet I did not want to listen to anyone I would prefer to do the teaching. My mother always caught me playing school with my Barbie 's and I was always showing them how to do something. This longing for leadership transferred into my adult life and once given the chance to be a mentor to someone I excelled at it. My very first trainee was Danny Weddell and he taught me so much. He reminded me to be patient, to be clear and concise, and above all work side by side with him. One of his biggest strenghts, and something I learned from him, was public speaking. (Hossain, 2016) A leader has to be able to manage the day to day of his/her team, but above all the team must follow them. In order for the team to follow them, a leader must simply lead. It sounds simple, yet it is profound. Forbes mentioned a few charactersitics of a great leader: honest, communication skills, delegates, confident and committed to name a few. The one that stood out the most to me was honest. Trust can be the key factor to erode a great team. If a leader has the team following them but they do not trust him it will all fall apart one day. I remember being too honest at times and it costing me a write up from my boss. I was for the employee and didn’t think enough of myself. I went to bat for her and ended up getting in trouble. Kristen Keck, the employee I am referring to, to this day will be there for anything I may need from her. She is loyal to me because she knew I had her back and I was always honest. I adapted to it and later found out it wasn’t the culture I thought it was, it was their lack of leadership. When I jumped in and led them by setting an example they followed suit. To date they are still thriving as a team, of course, I am only 3 months into the role so things could change.
As I continue my journey at MedPro, I am excited about using what I have learned in taking this course. I am going to continue working on understanding the external factors that may control my outcomes so that I am prepared when they come about. I am also going to continue leading the team charismatically, and teaching them all they need to know to be successful. I am certain that the rewards for me being a servant leader will pay off and I plan to have a new car soon.
I am very flexible as a leader, but I was not always this way. I was once very rigid and followed the book of management. I later learned that this type of management didn 't motivate everyone. I quickly changed my style to be stern when needed and flexible when the right is
