The writing process has many different steps. Each step has unique attributes. People struggle with each of the different steps in the writing process. Some people have trouble thinking of what to write about, others have trouble editing and revising. Wrapping up the writing process with a strong conclusion can also be troublesome for many people. In this paper we will be discussing the first step in the writing process, what professional writers think about how to get started. We will be discussing the important first steps to make the beginning process of writing easier. According to the Webster’s New World Dictionary, the definition of style is “a characteristic manner of expression”(612). Usually words such as personal, individual, and unique also come to mind when we think of writing style. I have always associated writing style with belonging uniquely to one individual, meaning that everyone had his or her own style. After reading, “Style Toward Clarity and Grace” by Joseph Williams and “The Elements of Style” by William Strunk and E.B. White, I realized that style is not as unique as I thought. In fact, as I stated in my blog space, “writing has certain rules and elements that must be incorporated in to our writing in order to make our points clear to those we want to read it. Since these elements and rules are common to all writing, then style and good writing bring forth new meanings.”
I hear inner Strunk and White voices of “don’t overwrite”, “write in a way that comes naturally,” and so forth, going through my head. I have visions of endless Williams examples and illustrations on clarity. I see weeks of blog writings flashing through my memory. From all of this, I now own and believe in a firm and personal definition of what style is and what good writing entails. William Strunk and E.B. White’s book The Elements of Style, along with Joseph M. Williams’s book Style Toward Clarity and Grace helped lead me to this point, which is: what is the point?
Reflecting back to the start of English 122, I feel I may have started with a little more confidence in myself as a writer. As I progressed through the course however, I realized I had a lot of work in improving my skills. I found I needed to be refreshed of the basic construction of an essay as well as some basic grammar and syntax skills. Reflecting on the last eight weeks of English 122, I have learned the basic steps of the writing process, the importance of utilizing outlines, and have improved my overall writing skills in a formal essay.
The brainstorming techniques that work best for me are free writing and questioning. The free writing technique gives me the opportunity to write as freely as I desire. When free writing I am free from being critical of my work, and I am free from the worry of proper grammar and spelling. The free writing technique also helps me with writers block, allowing my creative juices to flow. The questioning technique is probally my favorite, I truly enjoy writing, and progressing at it. The who, what, when, why, where, and why questions, allow me to increase the detail, and information in my writing. What is writing style? I started out thinking that writing style is a personal thing and that all writers have their own style. But, this way of thinking is really just a simple way to answer the question. After more careful thought, I realized that style is actually quite the opposite of personal and original. Style is a form of standardization. As writers, we all follow certain rules and guidelines to make our point. Style is these rules and guidelines.
A technique I find more contributive is brainstorming. When I have found my topic but cannot seem to figure out what to write about it, I brainstorm. Brainstorming is where you have a topic and you write down everything you know that applies to that topic. For instance, if my topic is an author of southern literature, I would write their name in the center of a page and write ideas based on that. By brainstorming about the author, I can visually see the connections being made to my topic. After all my ideas have been put into words, it may be unorderly and unsightly. The writing process can be as frustrating as trying to organize and clean your kitchen. The writing process can be difficult because you have to complete the writing process step-by-step and it sometimes can give you quite a hard time. My writing process consists of several steps and I compare those steps to the operation of organizing and cleaning my kitchen. The writing process for me includes, pre-writing my essay by brainstorming, building upon my ideas, discovering an attention-grabbing introduction sentence, revising my essay, proofreading, writing a final draft and publishing the essay.
There are many parts to creating and perfecting your research paper but the most important is picking your topic. Your topic is the fundamental basis of what your paper is and also what it can be, depending on your supporting evidence. You do not want to be stuck with a boring topic because that will carry over into your paper and also your reader! You need to choose a very interesting topic for your paper so that you can build the correct foundation around it which will, in the end, support and flow your ideas and arguments into your readers mind. I, for one, it was quite a stressful experience before this course. Starting the paper was one of the main challenging elements of the writing process which I was faced with most of the time. For many unproductive hours, I would simply stare blankly at my writing computer screen while blank thoughts ran through my mind. Nevertheless, among many techniques that I erudite, free-writing is one of the most important step of writing, and had proven to be effective on my writing process. With my problem of not being able to generate ideas to put down on the paper, free-writing has helped me a tremendously. Proper free-writing helps a writer in ways beyond his or her imagination. For instance, when you free-write, your brain generates ideas that even a writer himself or herself might find hard to engender or grasp. Since the writer is not restricted when free-writing, your imagination is your limitation; you reserve the right to literally write about any number of themes which comes to mind. From these themes which you generate, you can then select what you feel fits best your argument. This is the advantage that I have come to realize in free-writing. Through this course, I have come to learn that everything requires just enough preparation in order for someone to tackle a particular task. Free-writing my papers at first, has made me more aware of my progress throughout the entire time of writing and certain aspects of my paper that I can improve on. Additionally, Free-writing has helped me realize that your paper can always improve; there are always new ideas firing in your mind. With free-writing you are able to capture these ideas on paper as they come to mind time after time. For future writings I will continue to work on my time allocation. Allocating your time properly is a crucial step in the process of writing. This allows to have ample time to complete all the sections in your writing. I
Prewriting of any paper, first entails a topic, without a topic we would have nothing to write about. I like to use Mind mapping, when I write my research papers; I take a whiteboard and put my topic in the center of the board in a circle. Then I add extensions to the topic with more circles that are connected to one another by a single line between one another. These added circles will be my topic of paragraphs and the information I will be discussing within them. I usually do 4-5 sentences within my paragraphs with a closing statement and then transition to my next paragraph. I write about 3-5 different paragraphs and then with a closing statement that backs up the information that I have presented for my readers to read. Mind mapping is the biggest part of writing a paper, due to the changes you make as you develop your arguments or statement that you want to convey in your paragraphs from your mind maps data.
