Writing is a vital part of life. Before the creation of written language human communication was limited to verbal, in-person conversations. Everything changed when writing allowed thoughts and ideas to travel farther and more efficient than ever before. Writing is a talent that we learn at an early age and only hone as we proceed through our academic careers. This being the case, as with any talent every writer has strengths and weaknesses. My personal writing strengths include an adept use of vocabulary and apt understanding of grammatical techniques. In contrast, my weaknesses consist of flaws in organization and staying focused on one thesis throughout a piece. A strong vocabulary, for instance, can make or break a piece of writing. The vocabulary used will not only convey the tone of the piece but will also aid in convincing the reader to sway with the author’s purpose. Having a firm grasp on vocabulary has proven beneficial numerous times in my writing career. One instance where this was true was during a exercise in high school. The task was to convince our teacher and the class that you were an important figure in a field that you knew nothing about. The easiest way to accomplish this was to take advantage of the words you used. Even if you know just as much about a topic as your audience, it is not difficult to feign knowledge if you sound intelligent doing so. In terms of my major, vocabulary is critical. One area I could improve in is organization. While I can easily get my ideas down, the ideas do not always flow into one coherent piece. One thing that is especially difficult for me is finding the correct transitions to bridge one concept to another. For example, when I was writing my final paper for college writing in high school, the part I struggled with the most was connecting my thoughts and keeping all of the information relevant throughout the lengthy piece. While I did accomplish such a task, I know that if I were to improve these skills, writing will become easier and less of a chore. The business atmosphere is more often than not very concise.
