Personality is a word that conjures up many connotations and it is a word that I associate with myself and those around me. When asked to to name an individual with a “strong” personality I can distinctly remember some specific people I have encountered in the past as well as those in my current circle whose personality is memorable and has had a strong impact in my life. Why is this? What makes an individual’s personality unique or memorial and others not as much? But perhaps the most important question is what makes an individual's personality their authentic personality to begin with? Is it biology, is it socialization and experiences, or is it only culture? Social learning was addressed by Kelly, Adler,and the cognitive tradition. According to Adler individuals have a desire to be connected with other people and to change positively to their perceived environment. This in turn influences their style of life (Shiraev, 2017, pg. 117). The cognitive tradition also recognized the importance of social identity, people perceived member to a social group or social identity, and believes it is important answering the question of who the individual is (Shiraev, 2017, pg. 248). The self is a concept that is thorough addressed through the cognitive tradition in Kelly’s work. First, the self is viewed as the subject of one's experience or identity and the ability to recognize one’s self as different from other people are separate from the world constitutes self-awareness (Shiraev, 2017, pg. 246). Furthermore, the self can be impacted by self-esteem, feeling of self-worth, and one’s social identify both of which can be influenced by one’s gender (Shiraev, 2017, pg. 246-249). Gender is addressed by Jung in his ideas on anima, which refers to men, and animus, which refers to women.
