There are a lot of point of views about higher education and whether or not it is important or worth the time, effort, and high cost. From my point of view, I believe that higher education is an important step in accomplishing your life goals. College, a type of higher education, can be a component of a person’s life goals - sometimes a rather necessary one. Coming to Ivy Tech and starting classes are a step in the journey to my life goals. Higher education is necessary for my life goals, but for some it’s not - it’s just a hindrance. A person’s life goals, background and preference have a lot to do with whether they feel higher education is required or optional. My life goals aren’t very specific at this point in my life, it’s possible that they may never be. I have so many things I’d like to accomplish in my lifetime, but I don’t know if I would consider them life goals. The ideas I do acknowledge as my life goals at the moment are wanting to make a difference in the world, or at least my undetermined field of work, and sharing my learned knowledge and experience with others. There are strengths and weaknesses of attempting higher education; strengths outweighing the weaknesses in my opinion. Higher education can help you gain experience, knowledge, contacts, and resources you could not have access to without attending college or another form of it. For me, I will definitely be pursuing a higher education as I feel it is necessary for achieving my life goals. Many people find the higher education a child receives, the higher the amount of money he or she will earn. Others find it is a waste of time and money to go to college after high school because of all the loans they would have to make up for after college. Many people have different point of views regards to the importance of college. In the articles Is College Worth It? and Why College Isn’t for Everyone, Leonhardt and Matthews have different opinions on the importance of college. Leonhardt argues that college is worth it because one who earns a college degree will be financially stable in the end, while Matthews believes that college isn’t for everyone because of the high-cost teenagers and adults will encounter when it comes to tuitions and fees.

After doing the developmental plan of my personal goal, I felt that this was an eye opener for me. It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
College education goes about the way to an effective future for people who are not kidding with it. Currently, a college education has turned in the base necessity in securing a job in different companies and although some people might think college is not worth the debt, in a long run it actually is.

Not having a college education is something that can prevent one from reaching goals and being able to control their own life. In an ever-changing society where nothing is certain, gaining a college education can be the life saving x-factor throughout life.
Many people tend to set goals. They can set goals for their personal life, academics, or even for their professional lives. You can literally set a goal for pretty much anything you can imagine. I believe that people should set goals, they help you stay focused and want to do better for the future. Goals change all of the time though, because of a lot of different reasons, maybe you found that one thing just really is not what you want to do with your life, so you find something else to do. To me that is just how life is, my goals will most likely change as I am getting older and trying to find what I want to do with the rest of my life.
It is true that there are things that need to be learn in everyday life, but that does not necessarily mean going to college will not advance that knowledge. Not only does attending college advance one’s mind, 69% of college students say it is very useful in helping them grow and mature as a person(Pew). It tells that people who attend college will mature more and have the knowledge of financial means that is being dealt with everyday. When asked why college is important, 39% say it is to help a student grow personally and intellectually(Pew). Obtaining a higher education will weigh on progressing one’s education.
Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviours. Motivation is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. Goal Setting is where we set specific targets aims that we wish to achieve, they need to be S.M.A.R.T or else they become dreams rather than believable goals. .

When planning for our future it is important to have clear goals in mind and to understand the steps that need to be taken to achieve those goals. My long-term goal is to run my own counseling center and employee at least one other person. Some Skills I already possess that will allow me to succeed with this plan are my ability to relate to people and be consistent in following the steps needed, even though it will be a long and tedious process.
Higher education is advisable and valuable because there are undeniable benefits from the moment a person starts college. It is obvious from in salaries of both sides that college is a worthwhile investment. There is no place like college to grow and discover yourself. Also, higher education creates undeniable opportunities for all who participate. Seeking out higher education is something all people, no matter the socioeconomic background or career plans, should advance in.
Achieving any goal requires self-discipline. It involves a conscious awareness of our actions and the ability to overcome some of the bad habits that might be holding us. Instilling self- discipline into our lives is not easy task.
