My Field Practicum: Personal Experience: My Experience

As I look into the near future, I cannot help but find myself nervously awaiting the arrival of my field practicum. The process of getting to this point has been long, and even though I feel as though I am ready, there is always the constant fear of the unknown. I am sure my classmates are also feeling the pressure that I find myself under. However, I believe we are all ready to take the next step. It is time for us to utilize our skills, face our challenges, and prepare ourselves for the upcoming practicum. During the last couple of semesters I have amassed some useful skills to aide me in the coming months. One of those skills is my ability to keep a conversation simple and flowing. The biggest challenge I cope with deals with open-ended questions. In theory, they are easy. However, when I am in the moment, I unconsciously resort to close-ended questions. Even when I feel like they are open, when I look back it is obvious they are not. I have been lucky that those I have talked with elaborated further without needing further prodding. Though I am not naïve enough to believe that future clients will do the same. Another of my weaknesses includes expressing empathy. I am great when it comes to empathizing with others, but I struggle with voicing it aloud. I have to stop myself from continuing the conversation and acknowledge my client’s feelings. I do not know why this is a struggle for me. It is not hard to accomplish, I just forget to do it. Another challenge I will face will deal with cultural competency. As I had not been around others significantly different than myself until I came to college, I find myself lacking in understanding.
