The most accurate cultural statement that can be made about my family is that we have no culture. For as long as I can remember, we have never done anything the same way twice. Every time we try to make a tradition out of something, we do not have the enthusiasm to do it more than once, and oftentimes my parents are too busy to put the time into developing a family culture. My parents’ families were both like this in some respects as well. In both cases, their parents were too busy working to establish longstanding traditions. This has created in all of us the quality of being disjointed from any kind of nostalgic family heritage. We are ambitious, and we seek progress and change. We are not at all physically affectionate, as a general rule we do not verbally express our appreciation for each other very often, and we generally go about our business without bothering each other. My father is a very solitary person, and as a result I do not talk to him very much and we are not extremely close. My mother is much less distant than my father, and I tell her everything. We all view family as important, and we are willing to talk about serious things with each other, but as a whole we do not spend a great deal of time together. Now, my family does not really have to think about money that much, as my dad is a trauma surgeon and my mother is a nurse. My family’s view on wealth is complicated. My father is an extremely generous person, and he freely helps people in their time of need, and he does not shame people for having enough money or give people preference based on wealth. However, my family does have an expectation that I and my siblings will get good jobs and be wealthy.
