My Educational Philosophy
A teacher, according to Webster’s New College Dictionary, is one who “imparts knowledge or skill.” In truth, however, the responsibilities of a teacher ascend far beyond this formal definition. For many year teachers as a whole have guided and molded each generation, thus have guided and molded the future. Being part of such a grandeur undertaking serves as ample motivation for entering the education field. Teaching will give me the opportunity to take part in one of the institutions that America prides herself on: public education. I will contribute to the goal of providing everyone, even the most disadvantaged, with an opportunity to acquire knowledge and better him or herself. I will help to pass on our culture, values and knowledge to the next generation. As an aspiring elementary school teacher, I also find motivators on a smaller scale. Working with children will teach me about myself and help me to continue my own learning throughout life. It will also provide me with an opportunity to impact many students’ individual lives. In my opinion, all students have an inherent desire to learn, some simply have yet to find it. It is the primary responsibility of the teacher to find this flame in children and then fuel it in the classroom. Because of this, elementary school teachers have many important decisions to make about the classroom and what will take place in it.
With some limitations, teachers basically design their own classroom. I think the first step in successfully teaching children is creating a rich learning environment. I hope to not only, “impart knowledge and skill to others,” but also to help create self-regulated learners who can continue to learn and adapt throughout life. I will close with a much more appropriate definition of a teacher in the words of Harvard professor Robert Coles. “All good teachers rescue us from the death of boredom, apathy, self-preoccupation, and self-satisfaction: the teacher as an intellectual and moral life saver who fortunately has come our way and, of course, the teacher as one who is rescued by rescuing others.”

My Educational philosophy is defined in becoming a teacher as a set of ideas and beliefs about education that guide the professional behavior of educators. Also included in educational philosophy are one’s beliefs about teaching and learning, students, knowledge and what is worth knowing. My five general purposes for philosophy of education are: to set goals of plan, to teach useful and relevant information, be aware of students learning styles, modeling positive cooperative behavior, to look for solutions and to make sure those solutions are working.
Everyone’s witnessed a teacher in action in one form or another. Whether they sat in the classic classroom learning their numbers from the chalkboard or were engaged in an individual activity guided by a mentor in the field, every time there is a teacher present. Growing up, this was my perception of teacher, that everyone could be one. And while I still believe there in truth in that statement, my own studies and setting off on the path to becoming an educator have shown me that some of the finer details of teaching have been glossed over from the student’s point of view. I believe to teach is to make a difference in the world. As an Early Childhood Educator, I can be certain that anything taught and beneficial to young students can pave the way for them to a have colorful future that will help improve the future of humanity and the earth in the long run. Obviously, teachers play a huge role in their students’ education but I believe the students themselves play an even bigger role as they are the driving force of what they learn.
In a society where kids must go to school up to the collegiate level, teaching is an impactful career choice. Teachers help contour the minds of future leaders of the world. Furthermore, teachers play a crucial role in guiding students to the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to succeed in life, and teachers lead students to make informed decisions on any topic the meet in the future. As a teacher, a person must relinquish their knowledge onto students. Finally, they must prepare their students for all the obstacles they will face later in life.
Others of us might be called to be a teacher, teachers have a big responsibility, and teachers have the responsibility and the opportunity to be examples that children look up to. Teachers have the responsibility to guide students in the way that they should go. James 3:1 says, “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” In many ways education prepare students for their future career, thus the teachers job to help guide the student develop their gifts and encourage their interests to find their calling. This is a difficult job, there is no one size fits all program, children all have individualized needs, struggles and talents.
Becoming a teacher was not something I always knew I wanted. As I approached an age where I really started considering what I would like to do for a career I only knew that I did not want to work in an office behind a desk all day. I wanted a job that would be interactive, challenging and exciting. I also knew I wanted a job that would be important and would somehow contribute to the world in an important way. I thought being a teacher; particularly a teacher in the primary levels would fulfill those hopes and goals assuming I dedicate myself to becoming an effective teacher who has a positive influence on the lives of my students.
As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. One of the main reasons I want to become an educator is because I feel education has really lost teachers who truly love teaching and those who truly love teaching and those who have the desire to make a difference. I feel I can really help make a difference in the education world and bring back the love to teach.
My interest in teaching started at a young age. I used to watch my teachers in awe as they were able to find new ways to get their students involved and excited to learn. Their enthusiasm to teach was so inspiring. I would often find myself using that same fervor as I grasped each concept. I, then, was able to relay it to my fellow classmates as a peer tutor. To this day, becoming a teacher is a passion that flows through me. However, my enthusiasm and passion are not the only reasons I would be a good teacher. I aspire to see a student’s ability to grasp the knowledge they never before understood. I aspire to see a student succeed at something they never thought they ever could. I aspire to not only support students with academic skills, but also with life lessons about the value of community, pride in one’s own ethnicity, good citizenship, sportsmanship, and more. As we reminisce and reflect back either on our childhood or academic career, we tend to have that one teacher who was memorable to us in some way - for their sense of humor, their stellar personality, or perhaps having that charisma and charm no other teacher had to make a difficult subject and it 's concepts fun to learn. While knowledge is power, I firmly believe that it is rather the exchange and distribution of knowledge that is power. When one can educate the masses there is no doubt that together we can accomplish great things. Becoming a teacher would mean the opportunity to be able to witness the shaping and molding of the minds of the future generations and the satisfaction knowing that you have helped your students set themselves onto the right path and provide guidance towards the creation of a better tomorrow. Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
Individuals who enter the field of education reply to the question why teach with various answers. There is beauty, joy, and fulfillment in this profession, and these spirit-lifting emotions are the result of watching annually as a new group of children enter to learn and leave with the knowledge to achieve. Richard Dufour (2000), author of Why Teach expressed his views on the profession first by stating that teaching is not the career for everyone. He goes on to say, that the education profession has the ability to present the “unique opportunity” for individuals to cast a positive influence upon others (Why Teach, 2000, p.1). The smiles received from a room full of students when as a whole their individual needs, both educational and personal have been catered to, prompts a burst of passion in every teacher.
A teacher can make or break a student, and as a teacher, you will greatly impact someone's life for the better or for the worse. So teach with all your might. Teach with the same patience, respect, and enthusiasm as you would wish upon yourself. And remember, “If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself.” ― Albert Einstein
Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I always knew that teaching would be the career for me, especially when I began working in the school system as a substitute secretary. I loved working in the school environment; coming in contact with children everyday made me realize how much I would enjoy teaching a classroom full of students.
