The biggest adaptation I have had to make in my life was moving to
college. Not only was it totally different from high school in relation to the
content of classes and homework, but it was also completely different from my
home life. I was living on my own, with new surroundings and new people.
Needless to say, this was something like I had never experienced before.
Generally, college classes aren't that much more difficult than high
school courses. The big difference is that in college I have to do all of my
homework outside of class. There's no study hall in college. I have to take it
upon myself to get to the library if needed or ask the necessary questions.
Another big difference between high school academics and college academics is
the importance of the test. Unlike in high school, where daily assignments can
help to pad a grade, the main source of grading in college is the test. With
possibly only three tests per semester in certain classes, I am under a heavy
burden to do well on each test. Also, with all of the independence I now have,
homework and studying are not always my first priorities. I would much rather
spend time with my friends, watch television, or go to a party than do my
schoolwork. I have found that all the distractions that are present in college
life lead to procrastinating. There have been many times when I have put off
doing an assignment until the night before. It is obvious that as a college
student, I have had to adapt to a whole new style of learning.
Another thing that I have had to adapt to is living on my own. Since I
don't have a curfew anymore, I feel more independent than I ever have before. I
no longer have to worry about coming home late or tell anyone where I'm going to
be. Coming home means going back to my own place instead of my parents' house. I
don't have to ask anybody if I can do this or that; I can, for the most part, do
what I want to do whenever I want. This can have both advantages and
disadvantages.
College is a wonderful experience that only a few get to expose to. Any four year university offers a great opportunity for anyone; either for the diverse rich culture college campuses offer, or the hundreds of organizations and the thousands of connections that can offer one person. In the real world today a college degree is almost “required” for any career or a good stable job. Few necessities in America are cheap or free. For example: water, health insurance, and welfare are just to name a few. Public education is on this list of free necessities in America. Coming from a person who went through the public education system for 14 years, I loved my experience and did not take it for granted. My school district wasn’t the best, but it sure wasn’t the worst. I enjoyed my time in public education and I made lifelong friends that I will never forget. My experience on the collegiate level so far has been amazing as I am on the path of accomplishing my goal to my dream career. Unfortunately, not everyone can say the same statement. A lot of people
During the time of the Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692, more than twenty people died an innocent death. All of those innocent people were accused of one thing, witchcraft. During 1692, in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts many terrible events happened. A group of Puritans lived in Salem during this time. They had come from England, where they were prosecuted because of their religious beliefs. They chose to come live in America and choose their own way to live. They were very strict people, who did not like to act different from others. They were also very simple people who devoted most of their lives to God. Men hunted for food and were ministers. Women worked at home doing chores like sewing, cooking, cleaning, and making clothes. The Puritans were also very superstitious. They believed that the devil would cause people to do bad things on earth by using the people who worshiped him. Witches sent out their specters and harmed others. Puritans believed by putting heavy chains on a witch, that it would hold down their specter. Puritans also believed that by hanging a witch, all the people the witch cast a spell on would be healed. Hysteria took over the town and caused them to believe that their neighbors were practicing witchcraft. If there was a wind storm and a fence was knocked down, people believed that their neighbors used witchcraft to do it. Everyone from ordinary people to the governor’s wife was accused of witchcraft. Even a pregnant woman and the most perfect puritan woman were accused. No one in the small town was safe. As one can see, the chaotic Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692 were caused by superstition, the strict puritan lifestyle, religious beliefs, and hysteria.
In conclusion, the Salem Witch Trials were result of hysteria. One of the strongest evidence that explains this extraneous things that occurred were the Ergot Poisoning. It was cleared that those persons were cultivating breads or vegetable. They had to blame someone or something for those things that were happening. Those trials were caused by the incomprehensible and exaggeration of what the Bible says. They didn’t realize that kill is a sin and if they want to be the model society they have to show to the whole world. They were killers, they didn’t think about the innocent people that were killed. I think that God wants to communicates is that in this world there is evil and the devil exist and we need to fight against them, try to save those people that are down the devils hand. We need to be light in this world.
To better understand the events of the Salem witch trials, it is necessary to understand the time period in which the accusations of witchcraft occurred. There were the ordinary stresses of 17th-century life in Massachusetts Bay Colony. A strong belief in the devil, factions among Salem Village fanatics, and rivalry with nearby Salem Town all played a part in the stress. There was also a recent small pox epidemic and the threat of an attack by warring tribes created a fertile ground for fear and suspicion. Soon prisons were filled with more than 150 men and women from towns surrounding Salem.
In other words, two teachers may give the same assignment two completely different grades based on their own grading style. This puts an incredible amount of stress on a student because they need to complete assignments that will satisfy their current teacher, whose expectations and grading style could be very similar or very different from the student’s previous teacher. Alfie Kohn believes that the influence grades have on a student’s life doesn’t help this situation, and may even make it worse by providing students with a false sense of security about their knowledge. In her article “From Degrading to De-grading”, she states that scores on tests can be largely based on how the test was written and what skills were tested (Kohn 240). Therefore, it is up to teachers to identify what topics students must master in order to be proficient and score well on standardized tests. But when the class is not structured with a consideration for the material used on such tests, students enter the test blind to the skills that they will be expected to know and use. Anyone can memorize a list of facts off a study guide and score well on a multiple choice test the next day, but skills such as analyzing literature and interpreting a handful of graphs containing data from a scientific experiment are skills that require time and hours of instruction to master.
Although there are numerous factors and events that helped shape the influence on the Salem witch trials, there is plenty of evidence that the trials were caused by the community. In the year 1692, the church and state were not separated. The Puritan society followed a path where religion was enforced by the government. Superstition was also a contributing factor to the trials. The trials did not have scientific explanations and it was all based off of fear.
The tragedy of the Salem Witch Trials will forever hold a place in America’s history. With change for those living in the new world, came an abundance of unfortunate events. Those events being over one-hundred people being accused of practicing witchcraft, and twenty of them, just in Salem, were wrongfully tried and hanged. The trials played a big role of people’s views on religion and
My experience so far at William Penn University has been a roller coaster ride. It has had its ups and downs similar to any other new experience to a person. As a freshman it takes some adjusting to get used to the style, especially when I have had the support from my parents for a long time. I have had moments here that I have enjoyed, and other ones that I would rather not have to deal with. It has been a full 7 weeks, but it definitely has been an experience I will need in the future and it is better to learn it now than later on down the road.
home. I would do anything and go anywhere just to get away from my parents;
By giving students the ability to choose the technique in which they take their tests, professors are giving them more confidence which increases productivity. A vast majority of professors use short and/or long answer test; however, this can be damaging too many of their students’ scores. Pink gives the example of Zappos founder Tony Hsieh who gives his employees the autonomy to work without scripts, monitoring, or timing (101). The problem with how professors are giving test is that not all students can work to their best ability in short and/or long answer test. Pinks concept is to give people the ability to choose the method that best fits them so they can produce their best results. For example, Student 1 has the best result on tests when they are multiple choice; however, student 2 has the best result when the test are oral. Professors do not want their students to ...
College is a great experience where no all high school students get the chance to live the feeling of a college student before their graduation. High school might be great for these teenagers, but college is even greater. College can offer them a lot more experience than they get while in high school. Becoming a college student and having a professional education is more than important for new generations. The importance of having an associate degree, a doctoral degree, and a master degree symbolize a successful person. Becoming an educated person with any degrees will make that person’s life as simple as attending to school and getting the best out from it. Now, high school students should attend to college before or after they graduate to
Finally the biggest difference between high school and college is aid toward becoming better prepared for the new material.
When I first enrolled here at State University, I never thought I would ever be in the position to graduate. Finishing college was a huge goal growing up but it was also my biggest fear. But after three and a half years of dedication I plan to get my degree in the fall. Getting this far in college was not easy, it took encouragement from family, dedication, and assistance from others to reach this position.
...hods of fill-in-the-blank or multiple choice exams. In my classroom, grades won't carry as much weight as the actual learning the students undertake.
In the twenty-first century, we use the internet for almost everything that we do. We use search engines such as Bing or Google to find information. Websites like Netflix and Hulu allow us to watch shows and movies without an expensive cable or satellite subscription. Social networks provide a new way to communicate with friends and family. Entire companies are run through the internet. With gas prices rising every day, it has also become increasingly popular to see a lot of jobs turn to telecommuting. It’s only natural that as other aspects of our lives conform to the internet, that online dating should also begin to be more prevalent in how we form new romantic relationships. Online dating is the new normal, and this is more evident now than ever.
