Money Advertisers Targeting Youth

Advertisers make millions of dollars each year off of kids. This is because advertising is becoming a bigger role in the lives of youth. Since deregulation in 1984, the money advertisers make off of kids has been increasing by millions each year. kids who don't even have the brain function to make a good choice on what they buy are being targeted as young as 5. As young kids become more accustomed to certain products young, they continue buying them over their whole life. This is what advertisers are causing by targeting the youth. Advertisers are finding that marketing to kids makes a lot of money, the youth believe everything they hear, and the advertising techniques they do today are almost sure to work.

That's a lot of money but in 2007, CBS news estimated that advertisers spent $17 billion on children. Compare that to the amount of money advertisers spent on children in 1983 ($100 million according to CBS news). This is due to deregulation in 1984 which basically allowed advertisers to target kids as much as they want. The money kids spend has gotten so high because kids see something heavily advertised on TV (maybe even in a movie or TV show) and nag their parents until they buy it for them.
