The next man that Janie confides in is Joe Starks. Joe in a sense is Janie's savior in her relationship with Logan Killicks. Joe was a well kept man who worked for "white-folks" all his life and had earned enough money to move himself to a town called Eatonville that was run completely by black people. Janie meets Joe while she is still married to Logan and she begins to lean on him ever so slightly. She has wanted to leave Logan, and she wouldn't have if Joe had not come along. Joe convinced Janie that he would be better off for her by telling her, "Janie, if you think Ah aims to tole you off and make a dog outa you, youse wrong.
In “Who Shot Johnny” by Debra Dickerson, Dickerson recounts the shooting of her 17 year old nephew, Johnny. She traces the outline of her life, while establishing a creditable perception upon herself. In first person point of view, Dickerson describes the events that took place after the shooting, and how those events connected to her way of living. In the essay, she uses the shooting of her nephew to omit the relationship between the African American society, and the stereotypic African American society.
In the last chapter Jody and Janie got into a huge fight in the store which consisted of many verbal and physical attacks. In chapter 8 after the fight Jody moves into another room into the house. During this time Jody’s health begins to deteriorate along with their relationship, they stop talking altogether and Jody stops eating the food she cooks. Janie then decides that Jody needs to see a real doctor, instead of the ones that he was seeing who offered “miracle cures”, so she sent one from Orlando. After assessing Jody he determines that his kidneys had stopped working and that he was dying. After learning of his fate, Janie decides that she wants to see Jody one last time, when she goes to talk to him they get into one last argument
The first time Janie had noticed this was when he was appointed mayor by the town’s people and she was asked to give a few words on his behalf, but she did not answer, because before she could even accept or decline he had promptly cut her off, “ ‘Thank yuh fuh yo’ compliments, but mah wife don’t know nothin’ ’bout no speech-makin’/Janie made her face laugh after a short pause, but it wasn’t too easy/…the way Joe spoke out without giving her a chance to say anything on way or another that took the bloom off things” (43). This would happen many times during the course of their marriage. He told her that a woman of her class and caliber was not to hang around the low class citizens of Eatonville. In such cases when he would usher her off the front porch of the store when the men sat around talking and laughing, or when Matt Boner’s mule had died and he told her she could not attend its dragging-out, and when he demanded that she tie up her hair in head rags while working in the store, “This business of the head-rag irked her endlessly. But Jody was set on it. Her hair was NOT to show in the store” (55). He had cast Janie off from the rest of the community and put her on a pedestal, which made Janie feel as though she was trapped in an emotional prison. Over course of their marriage, he had silenced her so much that she found it better to not talk back when got this way. His voice continuously oppresses Janie and her voice. She retreats within herself, where still dreams of her bloom time, which had ended with Joe, “This moment lead Janie to ‘grows out of her identity, but out of her division into inside and outside. Knowing not mix them is knowing that articulate language requires the co-presence of two distinct poles, not their collapse into oneness’ ” (Clarke 608). The marriage carries on like this until; Joe lies sick and dying in his death bed.
The protagonist in this story is Marcus Yallow, a senior at Cesar Chavez in San Francisco, California. He is 5’8” with slightly long hair. He is 17 and lives with his parents, Lillian and Drew. Marcus plays a very big role in this story by being the main person in charge of the attack against the Homeland Security. Also, the story is told in the perspective of Marcus which also leads me to believe that he is the main character in this story and has a very big impact. I believe the author made most of the events centered around Marcus because they wanted the readers to have an emotional connection to Marcus and feel for the pain that he deals with throughout the story.
I understand that I am going to attempt to keep Johnny out of jail because what he had done in my perspective was self defense. This happened in The Outsiders book. Hinton, S. E. The Outsiders. He had not attempted to kill him, he was using self defence, as the novel had stated in chapter 4, Johnny warns the socs that showed up that they were in a part of town that they were not supposed to be in but the socs ignored the warning and still provoked the fight. Later in chapter 4 it also informs us that the socs were starting to drown Ponyboy so Johnny had used his switchblade without really meaning to kill anyone. Johnny has informed me that he and Ponyboy Curtis were walking in the park in the evening and that a vehicle had shown up and some boys had gotten out and threatened them. These boys had pulled out a knife and threatened to use it against them. One of the boys then started to assault Johnny and another attacked Ponyboy. The one attacking Ponyboy then decided to move him to a fountain and tried to drown him. When Johnny realized what they were doing he had turned to them and pulled out a knife and flung at them without meaning to kill Bob. But keep in mind that Bob was drowning Ponyboy so this act was used in defense. I feel that Johnny is innocent because he was using self defense, but he should not have ran from the crime scene. Another thing in chapter 4 was that a little while later when Ponyboy came conscious again Johnny said, "I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. “They might have killed you. And they had a blade... they were gonna beat me up...." I found this informat...
Jimmy and Billy were walking down the street on the way to Reitz, then as they were walking by the bowl and they see a big,grey, saucer shaped,object in the middle of the field. At first, they don’t think anything crazy of it so they walk up and investigate. This object is bigger and much different than anything they’ve ever seen before. They kinda start to realize what it is when they see what looks to be a family photo outside the object ,but in the family are beings unknown to mankind. That’s when Jimmy freaked out and said they need to tell somebody, but Billy is saying that everybody must already know.
War is gruesome. War is brutal. War is horrible. These statements are definitely the main focus throughout the book, Johnny Got His Gun. This book reveals the harsh reality of war, which is usually not discussed. Johnny Got His Gun portrays how war can ruin someone's life or even leave them dead by revealing the true story of Joe Bonham or known as Johnny in the book. The book is narrated by Johnny, a soldier from World War I that has no legs, arms, or even a face due to a mortar shell hitting very close to him. He cannot hear, talk, or see but remains alive and conscious which influences him to have a great hatred for war. Johnny's negative thoughts about war are undoubtedly revealed throughout the novel.
In the beginning of the story, Janie is stifled and does not truly reveal her identity. When caught kissing Johnny Taylor, a local boy, her nanny marries her off to Logan Killicks. While with Killicks, the reader never learns who the real Janie is. Janie does not make any decisions for herself and displays no personality. Janie takes a brave leap by leaving Killicks for Jody Starks. Starks is a smooth talking power hungry man who never allows Janie express her real self. The Eatonville community views Janie as the typical woman who tends to her husband and their house. Janie does not want to be accepted into the society as the average wife. Before Jody dies, Janie is able to let her suppressed anger out.
Music from the civil war is huge. It impacted the outcome of the war and some say that the confederate a would've won if they had music like the north did. So as you can see music plays a huge role. Johnny and Dally are both major characters in the novel “The Outsiders” by SE Hinton. “The Outsiders” is a novel about friendship, rivalry, stereotypes, trust and family relationships set in the 1960’s of America. SE Hinton. Describes how two gangs, the Socs and the Greasers get to know each other’s problems in an exciting and nail-biting storyline. Johnny and Dally are both very contrasting characters and each play a vital role in both the novel and Ponyboy’s life.
