I work in Pre-Surgical service and I do not deal with mentally ill patients that are like cases discussed in the video. Although I do come across with mental illness patients who require surgery. It is sometime difficult to conduct phone interview and complete health assessment when patients are high on drugs or due to added stress of upcoming surgery in a stressful state. Where they are not able to provide their health history or they are unable to comprehend instructions. Sometimes is very difficult to reason with mentally ill patients especially if the patient is having symptoms of the disease. It is crucial to obtain complete medical history including medication since there is potential interaction between the anesthesia agents and the psychotropics. Anesthesiologist need be aware of the medications patient is taking to eliminate or minimize negative interactions of drugs. In addition, nurse’s assessment will provide anesthesiologist information about patient’s physical and psychological states, risk of withdrawal and risk of psychiatric recurrent or relapse. We usually send for anesthesia or nurse practitioner review for cases we identify as red flag or high risk for anesthesia. …show more content…

Nurse practitioner can connect patients to resources in the community and collaborate with other health care professionals such as psychiatrists, counselors and other community outreaches. The most important thing for mentally ill patients is communication as mentioned in the video. Clear communication and follow up to make sure that the patient understood instructions. If they need assistance setting up appointments, transportations for appointments or any other issues that would hinder the treatment outcome then priority should be dealing with any barriers to accessing and maintaining
