Kim Ryan was nominated for the inaugural Australian Mental Health Prize because of her dedication and years of hard work she put into improving mental health care around the country. Her work in this area and in helping nurses who work in mental health has finally been recognised. Ms. Ryan has been the CEO of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses since 2004. She was the first and only staff member, but due to her diligence and hard work, the office now has 10 staff members in the Deakin health district. Seven finalists were chosen from across the nation for these new awards that recognise the efforts of those who have made a substantial contribution in the mental health sector, whether through advocacy, research and services, prevention and treatment, or promotion. …show more content…

Ms. Ryan said, “I think it’s crucial that all nurses and midwives, not just the mental health nurses, embrace their role in mental health – we’ve got about 374,000 nurses and midwives in Australia, and my goal is really to make sure all of those people are more aware of mental health.” She continued with, “I think we need to have all nurses more comprehensively trained to deal with these illnesses – there needs to be a greater focus on mental health in the nursing curriculum and we need more people literate in the needs of these patients.” Kim Ryan believes that all medical professionals need to be aware of how a patient feels.
