Topic: Mental Illness Introduction: Mental health involves our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health affects us on how we think, feel, or act. It helps us determine how to handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. (MentalHealth.gov, 2017). “Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.” (para 1, 2017) There are many types of conditions that are recognized as mental illnesses such as the anxiety disorders, eating disorders, or depression. Anxiety disorder is an irregular or repeated attacks of intense fear of something bad that will happen. Many factors involve to mental health problems, including biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry, life experiences, such as trauma or abuse or family history of mental health problem. Some signs of someone having a mental illness is when they eat or sleep too much or little, feeling numb or like nothing matters, feeling helpless of hope, or when they think of harming themselves or others. (MentalHealth.gov, 2017). I know someone that had an anxiety disorder. This person kept thinking about what’s happening in his life and what he is planning for his future. He always studies because he wants to accomplish big achievements in his life especially after graduation. He always put pressure on himself through pushing himself and expecting too much. He felt like he wasn’t worth it and was scared of not being enough for people close to him. As a result, he had a breakdown and was overthinking about things negatively. Things that are not even happening yet so it worried him more. He was scared about not being able to graduate, achieve his goals, and make his parents proud. He didn’t talk to anyone about it and kept it himself. Until the time came where he couldn’t handle it anymore, he tried to cut himself. (Canadian Mental Health Association, 2018). There are many ways to maintain a positive mental health. These includes getting professional help if ever you need it, connecting with others, getting physically active, getting enough sleep, and developing coping skills as well. (MentalHealth.gov, 2017). By doing these things, it will allow them to know their full potential, cope with the stresses of life, or work productively. In a Canadian mental health survey, only a third of people with symptoms of a mental illness went to a professional for help. It means that most people (two-thirds) didn’t ask for help. Family doctors, psychiatrists, or counsellors can provide professional help to those people who suffer mental illnesses, and they should take advantage of this opportunity rather than keeping their feelings inside
