Health can come in multiple shapes, sizes and forms. When health is usually addressed, the first thought that comes to mind is physical fitness. The truth behind fitness is that good mental health provides the pathway to having a good state of wellbeing in any other aspect of life. Unfortunately, numbers of mental illness cases continue to rise around the world with around 1 in 4 Australian youths currently battling a mental illness. These can be due to a number of stressors such as schoolwork,assignments, bullying, high expectations, just to name a few. The purpose of this report is to identify the main stressors or triggers for students at The Rockhampton Grammar School and to recommend strategies that could help combat these stressors.

Stress due to school work can lead to mental illnesses such as anxiety. This mental illness can impact the way that the brain works, which can lead to constant worrying and fear which can impact an individual’s way of life (http://www.webmd.com/anxiety-panic/guide/mental-health-anxiety-disorders#1) and thus it is concerning to see a stressor like school work in people as young as 12. A stressor such as friends can lead to mental health issues such as depression or anxiety as well. Constant pressure to fit in and to be seen as a member of a particular friend group can lead to depression. People may feel ashamed of who they are and in some cases resort to measures such as self-harm or in extreme cases, suicide. A lack of free time is a stressor that will most likely result in anxiety. Over the counter drugs, massage therapy, counsellors, but two of the most effective solutions for mental illnesses like anxiety and depression are exercise and balanced social activity. Regular exercise helps to reverse the effects of both anxiety and depression. This will help in the way that it will help to rid the mind of the constant worry and fear that anxiety creates, and to erase harsh and irrational thoughts that depression causes, allowing you to think more sharply an clearly. The most common solution to medicate with is either antidepressants or a form of psychotherapy. Antidepressants affects brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters, the goal of the medication is to restore a sense of chemical balance in the brain, and relieving the individual from a constant state of depression. A doctor may prescribe a patient antidepressants for up to several months, depending on the severity. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, involves a routine discussion with a mental health care specialist (Depression and College Students). There is an incredibly large amount of different antidepressant to cater to those who may not respond to one type of medication. However, often these medicines come with a large list of side-effects. A good friend of mine described the side-effects of his experience with antidepressants, which included difficulty concentrating, insomnia, mood swings, among many other personal side-effects. He would often find it difficult to cope with the amount of side-effects, and he found them to be interfering with his daily routine. The results of this study found that the amount of inmates that participating in this study had a disproportionally number of inmates with mental healthy that were physically victimized. According to this study prisons are a violent and unsafe place for people who suffer from mental illness (Biltz). Male inmates who suffered from any form of mental illness were nearly 1.6 times more likely to be physically victimized while in prison. Females inmates who had a mental illness were even more likely to suffer from physical victimization, they were nearly 2 times more likely than male inmates with mental illness (Blitz). Inmates that were African Americans and Hispanics were more likely to be physically victimized either by inmates or staff.

As English-speaking countries move forward through time, testing becomes more stressful and more competitive, it should be expected that anxiety will increase. Mental health is a crucial part of our being and has a profound effect on how we live our lives. It determines how we socialize, how we reason, how we deal with our emotions, and how we handle stress; and when impaired and/or neglected, it can have crippling effects on the way in which we function on a cognitive or even physical level. While observing a grade one class, I have noticed that bullying is occurring at a very young age which was alarming to me. A few students were discussing how they did not want to interact with a certain student because he was "icky" and "weird". The social determinant of health that is applicable to this situation is social isolation, as the victim of bullying is being excluded and has a lack of social support among his peers. This may lead to the education determinant of health as the student may avoid coming to school because of his experiences he has with his peers, and he considers his environment as unsafe at school. If these incidences continue throughout his life there is a possibility the child may become depressed which may lead to suicide, as this is an occurring phenomena among students who are bullied. An example of this case would be of Amanda Todd, a female who has taken her life because she felt that she had no social support. Can you picture the student voted “most likely to succeed” in your graduating class? This individual must have had everything going for them. They probably had good grades, popular, never in trouble, no health issues and socially and emotionally stable. However, twenty years later, after graduating college, a successful business owner, had a beautiful wife and three kids, he decides emotionally he is done and takes his own life. Mental health issues can manifest at anytime with varying degrees of significance on the emotional stability of a person. Factors such as socioeconomic status, biological and environmental issues all dictate mental health needs. Obviously, a variety of circumstances can evoke these mental health issues. Now imagine coping with these mental health issues and being expected to still be a normal student and conform to your peers around you. This is what we expect of our students dealing with a variety of mental health issues. The policies and procedures are established to meet the needs of all students. The mental health issues are recognized and evaluated based on the best placement for the student to receive an education. The public school system has the responsibility to provide a free and appropriate education. The school does the best they can to provide a whole school approach to deal with the increasing number of mental health concerns. However, the mental health concerns carry on beyond high school.
Mental health is just as important as physical health in a person’s life. Mental health is critical to a person’s well-being, their ability to live a productive life and to keep a healthy family and interpersonal relationships. Mental health does not just affect the mind it also affects people’s physical health. Some physical health diseases can cause a mental health disorder and vice versa. Mental health disorders are associated with the occurrence, development, and outcome of some of the today’s most chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. When people go untreated from a mental health disorder are at a higher risk for many unhealthy behaviors such as alcohol and drug use, violent behavior, and suicide.
Academic stress is very common in student’s lives. Many students assume that making the academic experience their first priority now, will increase the chance of success in the future. School is an important aspect in most teenagers lives and by being so important a teenager can become depressed very effortlessly at school or because of school. Academic stress can take complete control over a student’s life, sometimes leading to depression. At school this may lead to poor attendance, a significant drop in grades or even annoyance with schoolwork, in a good student. There are many studies that have been performed to prove the correlation between responsibility in school and academic performance being the cause to academic stress. Just like there are numerous causes to academic there are also numerous cures, such as changing mind set and behavior. Academic stress is something majority of students in school can relate to and the cause of it can be something small as a bad grade on an evaluation, It will enforce the student to try harder in the future but it will for sure cause some sort of stress, even if it is for a moment. Our society today does not value our mental health like it should. If society would only pay as much attention to mental health, they would be better off in the long run. Think about an athlete playing a sport, they certainly understand how important physical health is. When a baseball player injures his knee, he is out and waits until it heals. But like many people, mental health is overlooked. Most teenagers do not realize that the many things like stress or eating disorders are coming from a poor mental state. They think that if they just ignore it they will snap out of it, this is not true and many times this kind of thinking will only make it worse (Change Your Mind). Mental Health has a big role in one’s overall health. Mental health not only affects the mind but also the body. The mind and the body work as one. When many stresses in life impact a person, they can either choose to deal with it positively or negatively. Dealing with stress negatively would to choose to depend on drugs and alcohol to make the stress go away. However using drugs and alcohol only create an illusion of relief.
