Psychiatrists are medical doctors that specialize in treatment of mental disorders. They are primary mental health-care givers. They diagnose and treat mental illnesses through a combination of psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, institutionalization, and medication. Psychiatrists help their patients find solutions to their problems through changes in their behavioral patterns, exploring past experiences, etc. Psychiatrists can work in a variety of environments. Some may work with elderly patients, others may work in the courts and criminal justice system, others may work in laboratory environments for research purposes and some may work in behavioral health hospitals or institutions with the patients. In my previous paper, I talked about the problem of child psychopaths. I discussed how they turn into adult psychopaths that commit crimes with little to no remorse. In this paper, I will discuss the theories behind child psychopaths and their links with crime. The two main theories that I will be discussing are biological positivism and general strain theory. These two theories seem to best explain the two different types of psychopaths. I will also discuss a third theory which combines biological positivism and general strain theory to create the interdisciplinary theory of biosocial criminology.
In ancient times, a superstition was once believed by humans that erratic behavior was the possession of spiritually evil demons, that only wizardry or sorcery could mend and cure the mentally ill. In 1808, a man named Professor Johann Christian Reil developed a new medicine field called Psychiatry, meaning the soul or mind. Eventually, the physicians practicing this medical field were known as Psychiatrist (“History of Psychiatry”). As time passed, the field started to evolve and the knowledge expanded becoming one of the oldest medical fields still existing today (“Psychiatrist – DO/MD”). Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are experts at preventing and treating psychological illnesses such as mental disorders. A Psychiatrist is a significant aspect to the medical field because they gain insight into the human mind, specialize in varieties of mental disorders, and help humans overcome internal problems.
There are multiple criteria that come into play when determining a psychological disorder. One reason is because, it is hard to know for sure if an action is abnormal or not. Something could be abnormal in our country, but a custom in another.
Mood disorders are emotional roller coasters where the person in one moment is enthusiastic and full of energy and in the moment after all of this crashes and the person becomes depressed. This is known as a bipolar disorder, the unipolar depression on the other had is a mood disorder where the person is in a deep depression state with no positive thoughts.

The FDA is constantly approving drugs for psychiatrists to use that are supposed to help with in their practice. Culture has a huge influence on how people view and deal with psychological disorders. Being able to successfully treat someone for a mental illness has largely to do with what they view as normal in their own culture. In Western cultures we think that going to a counselor to talk about our emotions or our individual problems and/or getting some type of drug to help with our mental illness is the best way to overcome and treat it, but in other cultures that may not be the case. In particular Western and Asian cultures vary in the way they deal with psychological disorders. In this paper I am going to discuss how Asian cultures and Western cultures are similar and different in the way they view psychological disorders, the treatments and likelihood of getting treatment, culture bound disorders, and how to overcome the differences in the cultures for optimal treatments.
In a country based around free will, the United States contains a vast variety of personalities and behaviors. Plenty of people, probably more than we know, exert abnormal behavior. Abnormal behavior is patterns of emotion, thought, and action that are considered pathological. Historically, people blame witchcraft for this eccentric type of behavior and tended to perform exorcisms in hopes of abolishing such actions. Anxiety disorders and personality disorders, two forms of abnormal behavior, can alter a person’s personality as a result of life experiences.
Many groups of people have experienced disenfranchisement over the years. Some groups included people suffering in political prisons to the of abusement towards the elderly people all over the world. The mentally ill are a part of this vast group of people. Mental illness is any disease of the mind and also the psychological state of someone who has emotional or behavioral problems that are serious enough to require psychiatric intervention. People with different mental disorders are given different kinds of medical care, given different treatment by everyday people, and are put into hospitals which is like “living in hell.” (NY Daily News).
“To study the abnormal is the best way to study the normal” (William James). Psychiatrists never give up on any of their patients and always help anyone who asks for it. Psychiatrists have a never ending work schedule. Sometimes their patients call them even without an appointment because they are really struggling and they have to go talk to them. Psychiatrists also have to get at least eight years of school and an additional three or more years of an internship (“Career Information Center” 142- 43) . Psychiatrist must also have good communication skills. If they do not then their patient will feel like they do not care about them and they are not listening and the psychiatrists will be putting even more pain and pressure on them (Social Skills Training) . Even though psychiatrists must go through many years of school and training, all of their hard work is pays off knowing that they help people every day.
Depression is a mental health condition which is widely recognised as one of the most common conditions for which people seek and receive care. There are many specific nursing problems which are encompassed by the medical term “depression” and these include physical, cognitive and behavioural patterns. Successful treatments of depression are psychosocial interventions which aim to identify and challenge a depressed persons pessimistic attitudes and beliefs and which promote an individuals’ participation in rewarding activities in an attempt to reduce any negative behaviours. The aim of this essay is to identify specific nursing problems which are encompassed by the term “depression” and relate these to a patient whom the author had met whilst out on clinical placement who had been given a medical diagnosis of depression. It is also the aim of this essay to discuss different psychosocial interventions and how effective these are in assisting a patient in their road to recovery.

A mental illness is when there is an abnormality in the brain. An example would be when a person is diagnosed with depression; there is a lack of serotonin in the brain.
