Nursing is a profession that I have always been fascinated with. Nursing is defined as "health promotion, health maintenance, health restoration and providing care to the sick and dying" (Kozier and Erb). There are five values essential to nursing, which include altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (AACN). Nursing is a profession in which the nurse uses caring as a central concept. Some other characteristics of the nursing profession include art, science, advocacy, and offering holistic care. Nurses use critical thinking in order to problem solve because every patient is unique. I would have thought the same, due to the qualities I have mentioned. I would like to research why men are entering the nursing profession. I feel that a male would join the profession because of the hours a nurse works. Men who like to fish and hunt can work as a nurse three days a week full time and have four days to enjoy leisure activities. The nursing profession is drawing more men into the field and usually thought for the same reasons as women. While attending high school, I also attended the Erie County Technical School, participating in the tool and dye lab. My main reason for entering the lab was the so-called “money” that I would be making when I graduated high school. After experimenting in the tool and dye profession by running lathe and mill machines and making a hammer from different types of steel I realized that the results I experienced from that environment “wasn’t my cup of tea”. My next decision was to pursue a technical degree from the drafting and design lab. In this lab, I would draw blueprints and work on the computer using a system to design house plans. It was then I knew that I wasn’t in the right profession. I knew that I always wanted to be in a profession that dealt with people and tool and dye and drafting didn’t fit the description. I am outgoing and “people” person and by all means, these two areas of once thought interest, now became dreadful. After talking with my family I decided to enter the nursing assistant lab. My hypothesis was that I was going to enjoy this type of environment. Taking care of patients and putting a smile on ones face is all it took for me to fall in love with what I do. Learning how to check blood glucose, vital signs, and how to use therapeutic interventions really let me bring out the traits
