“Meeting the Challenge” book has good information for educators and caregivers. This book talks about challenging behaviors in children, what could be causing the challenging behaviors, and possible strategies to help with challenging behaviors (Meeting the challenge: Effective strategies for challenging, in early childhood environments, 1999). Challenging behaviors are things children do that disrupt their learning or are harmful to themselves or other children (Meeting the challenge: Effective strategies for challenging, in early childhood environments, 1999, p. 7). An example of a challenging behavior could be when a child pushes another child in line. We deal with challenging behavior every day when working with children. Challenging behaviors have many causes. One of the strategies the book suggests is making a connection with the child( Meeting the challenge: Effective strategies for challenging behaviors in early childhood environments, 1999, p. 15). By building a relationship with the child you both are more appt to work together. Another stage in the book is to change the environment to meet the needs to meet the needs of the child( Meeting the challenge: Effective strategies for challenging behaviors in early childhood environments, 1999, p. 17). For example offing multiplies of the same toy in a toddler room, or labeling shelves in a preschool room with pictures and words. Also, you can change your approach with children by looking for the positive, and see through the eyes of a child (Meeting the challenge: Effective strategies for challenging behaviors in early childhood environments, 1999, p. 21).
