Medical Laboratory Technician from the name alone you know that it means someone that works in a medical laboratory. However, what does that person do, what kind of schooling do they need, how much do they usually make? These are all questions that we are going to try to answer, as well at looking into the history of medical laboratory technicians.
The field of medical laboratory technology was inaugurated in the early 1920s. This happened after $10,000 was donated to John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland to build to floors especially for medical lab work, in 1889. (Cohen, N.D.) On these floors they encouraged students to use microscopes to look for diseases. This helped with the diagnosis of the patients and advance to use of microscopes.
What is the job description of a medical laboratory technician? According to Monster.com their job description is to, “Provide information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests in toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology laboratories; receiving, typing, testing, and recording blood bank inventories. (Recruiting and hiring)” The test that a medical laboratory technician performs help the doctors to determine what is wrong with the patient and how to treat them. A medical Laboratory technician will prepare samples for analysis as well as run the test needed. They also match blood for transfusions. Medical laboratory technicians are becoming increasingly important due to the growing emphasis on prevention and early treatment of diseases.
