One of the main issues is how Corrections is portrayed by the majority of the public. The media, journalism and entertainment are one the prime reasons why. Both are quick to report negative stories, but nothing positive, which indoctrinates the mind of a citizen. The constant bias opinions give Corrections a bad reputation. According to an article written by Harriet Fox, convicted offenders view correction officers as an enemy. The result can lead to a lack of reporting, distrust with law enforcement, aggressive behavior towards law enforcement or just pure hatred. We always see the negative effects and causes in relation to the victim, but they never talk about what the correction officers truly go through on a daily basis. It’s not easy …show more content…

In addition, each department should focus on ethical procedures and strategies more often and eliminate corruption. For instance, I’ve witnessed police in my own town pull over in high crime areas, interacting and playing with the children. In Camden, New Jersey police held charity events in high crime areas, which was focused on building a better relationship with its local community. We could also focus on the children through education, such as the DARE program, Safer School Partnerships and Volunteer Police Cadets. Education will help build a better relationship. We need the children to grow up and have a more positive outlook on law enforcement. A lot of programs are not used as often as they should because of budget issues and pressures (Massey, 2014). Funding is a problem, but maybe cuts can be done elsewhere or the community can work together and fund it. The uniting factor within a community has been lacking over the years. A strategy called Community-oriented policing needs to be conducted more often. This doesn’t just fault on the lack of relationships between the children and police, but also a parenting issue, since parents may influence their children to dislike authority.
