The boarding house was a traven, polling place, and a post office. Mary Surratt boarding house was where John Booth came to know the Surratt family. He invited John Wilkes Booth to the boarding house. That lead to many meetings held there. The event of kidnapping the President never took place. Booth had convicted John about the plot to kidnap the president was a good idea. Investigators came to her house within six hours of the assassination. Most Americans know John Wilkes Booth as the assassin of Abraham Lincoln- shot at a play at Ford’s Theater on April 14th, 1865. However, the names of the conspirators that surrounded Wilkes Booth are relatively unknown, especially that of Mary Surratt. Mary Surratt, a mother and boardinghouse proprietor, was arrested and tried for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln along with her son, John Surratt. Pleas from her family, lawyer, and fellow conspirators did not allow her to escape her fate, and she was hanged for her crimes on July 7th, 1865. Even from the scaffold, Lewis Powell, another conspirator condemned to die, cried, “Mrs. Surratt is innocent. She doesn't deserve to die with the rest of us.” So who was this woman, and most importantly, what role did she really play in the assassination of the President of the United States? Was she simply blindly aiding her son and thus innocent, as claimed by Lewis Powell, or did she have a more involved role in the plot? Mary Surratt opened up her home to conspirators and ended up paying the price for her decision.

The author of this book, Bill O’Reilly, built up the plot of the story through vivid historical details and pieced them together like a thriller. I agree with most of O’Reilly’s ideas but there are some that I am not really sure about because of his point of view like many of the conspiracy theories. The massacre was initiated by accusations of a black man by the name of Jesse Hunter assaulting a white female by the name of Fanny Taylor. Meanwhile, members of the Ku Klux Klan rallied in nearby towns and gathered people to go and rise terror on Rosewood. The one person who knew the truth was a man named Sam Cartier. Who was lynched by the Ku Klux Klan as a warning to whoever was helping Jesse. It was soon rumored that Jesse’s friend Aaron’s cousin Sylvester was hiding him at his house. The KKK demanded

In Puritan led Massachusetts Bay Colony during the days of Anne Hutchinson was an intriguing place to have lived. It was designed ideally as a holy mission in the New World called the “city upon a hill,” a mission to provide a prime example of how protestant lives should have subsisted of. A key ingredient to the success of the Puritan community was the cohesion of the community as a whole, which was created by a high level of conformity in the colony. Puritan leaders provided leadership for all facets of life; socially, economically, religiously, and even politically. A certain hierarchy was very apparent in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, in which ministers always seemed to have gotten their way. Governor Winthrop got his way in 1637 by banishing a woman, Anne Hutchinson, whom he thought posed a threat to the structure of the colony. I believe that there is a legit rationale for her banishment, this being her religious ideas that were very close to that of the Antinomians who Governor Winthrop was not too fond of. I also think that this was not the primal reason. In my mind, Anne’s gender played a large role in determining whether or not she actually posed a serious threat to the solidarity of Massachusetts.
On June 29th, 1865, Mrs. Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt, David Herold, Samuel Mudd, Michael O'Laughlin, Edman Spangler and Samuel Arnold were found guilty of being a part of the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln. They were executed by hanging. In the movie they sent letters to Mrs. Surratt daughter Anna and a family priest to give to her son that she would be hung for her crimes. Surratt, Powell, Atzerodt and Herold were all sentenced to be hanged at Washington Penitentiary on July 7th, 1865. In the picture you can see that four conspirators were hung including Mary Surratt, Lewis Payne Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt. They were hooded and then a noose around their neck. The movie did not go in detail on if any of the victims struggled or died quickly. While looking up facts on Lincoln’s assassination and the trial, I found in a couple of excerpts that Mrs. Surratt and Herold died instantly and the other two struggled. In the ending of the movie it was stated that Mary Surratt became the first women to be executed by the federal government. According to Spartacus Educational it states “Five out of the nine members of the Military Commission, recommended that Mrs. Surratt be shown mercy "due to her sex and age". President Andrew Johnson was later to say he was never told this and he gave the order to hang
Lafayette Baker was a shady individual that could have possibly aided or prevented the death of President Lincoln. There was the possibility that if Lafayette had done a couple of things differently and did not look out for his own self-gain he could have prevented the assassination of President Lincoln. Lafayette was also involved in some different situations that could have played a role in facilitating the tragedy as well. Lafayette Baker’s greediness might have assisted the end to one of the greatest presidents in American History. Lafayette Baker’s connection to the murderer of President Lincoln and subsequent investigation show that he may have either been a part to the murder or could have prevented it.
On April 14, 1865 as Booth were saying good bye to his lovey Lucy, Mary was choosing between one of the two plays that they could pick: Aladin or The Wonderful Lamp, but Mary was most convinced to go The Wonderful Lamp because Laura Keene, an incredible and famous actress would be giving a one-night performance at the play. Lincoln went to see Stanton, who was the secretary of war and did not agree with Lincoln exposing himself and going to the play, but that insisted that since he was going he should at least take a body guard. Grant arrives at the White House for a meeting with Lincoln that invites him to go to the play with him, but he turns the invitation down since his wife, Julia Grant, was waiting for him to go back home.
