On April 14, 1865 as Booth were saying good bye to his lovey Lucy, Mary was choosing between one of the two plays that they could pick: Aladin or The Wonderful Lamp, but Mary was most convinced to go The Wonderful Lamp because Laura Keene, an incredible and famous actress would be giving a one-night performance at the play. Lincoln went to see Stanton, who was the secretary of war and did not agree with Lincoln exposing himself and going to the play, but that insisted that since he was going he should at least take a body guard. Grant arrives at the White House for a meeting with Lincoln that invites him to go to the play with him, but he turns the invitation down since his wife, Julia Grant, was waiting for him to go back home. Most Americans know John Wilkes Booth as the assassin of Abraham Lincoln- shot at a play at Ford’s Theater on April 14th, 1865. However, the names of the conspirators that surrounded Wilkes Booth are relatively unknown, especially that of Mary Surratt. Mary Surratt, a mother and boardinghouse proprietor, was arrested and tried for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln along with her son, John Surratt. Pleas from her family, lawyer, and fellow conspirators did not allow her to escape her fate, and she was hanged for her crimes on July 7th, 1865. Even from the scaffold, Lewis Powell, another conspirator condemned to die, cried, “Mrs. Surratt is innocent. She doesn't deserve to die with the rest of us.” So who was this woman, and most importantly, what role did she really play in the assassination of the President of the United States? Was she simply blindly aiding her son and thus innocent, as claimed by Lewis Powell, or did she have a more involved role in the plot? Mary Surratt opened up her home to conspirators and ended up paying the price for her decision.

Wanting the South to win the war, he never wanted the punishment of assassinating the president of the United States. Being a supporter of the Confederate, Booth believed that he assassinated Lincoln the momentum would spark the Confederate troops to life and lead them to victory. In Chasing Lincoln’s Killer, by James L. Swanson, the main characters were; John Wilkes Booth, Dr. Leale, Abraham Lincoln (even though he dies.) When John Wilkes Booth (a.k.a Booth) found out that the North had won the Civil War, he felt anger and disgust but he could do nothing. Booth had one plot that the book talked about and that was to kidnap the president and sell him to the leaders of the South but that plot never got put into action. When booth went to Ford's theatre got a letter, Booth worked at the theatre, the letter that said that the President of the United states would be visiting ford's theatre quickly he put a plot into works. First he went to get accomplices and they too would kill someone that night. When the time had come to Booth snuck into the President’s box, not even noticed he pulled out a gun and shot a bullet into the left side and under the left ear of the President's head. That didn’t kill the President, yet. When Booth tried to leave he was stopped by General Henry Rathbone, they had a knife fight while trying to stop both of them from leaving, although Booth got away jumping from the President's box and onto the stage shouting "Sic Semper Tyrannis" (Chasing Lincoln's Killer, by James L. The title of Thomas Craughwell’s novel, about the attempted ransom of President Abraham Lincoln’s body, immediately caught my attention. The novel’s title, Stealing Lincoln’s Body, immediately enticed me and was the first cause of my choice to read the book. I have read many books about the life and assassination of President Lincoln, yet I have never come across even the slightest mention of the plot to steal Lincoln’s body. He was assassinated on April 14, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C. His untimely death rocked the nation, who had recently ceased the bloody Civil War, and truly put the government’s strength to a test. Eleven years after this tragedy the plot for stealing the famed President’s body from its resting place in Springfield, Illinois was developed and carried through. A group of counterfeiters, under the control of James Kennally, schemed this devious act and decided that once they got the body they would hold it for a hefty ransom. Craughwell takes the reader through the planning and failed execution of the crime as a well as the aftermath of the trial and of the seemingly docile reactions by President’s Lincoln’s wife, son, and of the nation.

What was the process followed for the crime? As Booth noted at the pre-murder meeting, there had been a plan to kidnap Lincoln and exchange him for Confederate prisoners of war. Booth did not tell his companions, but nowadays the involvement of the Confederate intelligence services in that plan is beyond doubt. Southern nationalists had devised a plan that had a chance of success, but when it was about to take place, General Lee surrendered, so the confederation's chances of winning the war - if there were any left - disappeared completely.

After hearing about the John Brown, an abolitionist’s, bloody raid on harpers ferry, Booth was furious. He briefly joined the Richmond militia and witnessed Brown’s hanging, which happened in December. Later that summer, Booth was set to join a traveling theatre company, taking on the role of Hamlet.
