Lincoln went to see Stanton, who was the secretary of war and did not agree with Lincoln exposing himself and going to the play, but that insisted that since he was going he should at least take a body guard. Grant arrives at the White House for a meeting with Lincoln that invites him to go to the play with him, but he turns the invitation down since his wife, Julia Grant, was waiting for him to go back home.
