Monotheistic religions, especially Judaism, Christianity, and Islam promote the belief in One God; all that exists is because of God. Through prophets and scripture, God portrays moral goodness and truth. Essentially, these three religions believe that God speaks to us, unveils God’s Being, and seeks to guide us through life. In turn, humans should embody the moral goodness and excellence that is revealed to us by God. These religions are taught based upon both scripture and reason. When reading traditional texts, the tools of reason and social sciences are required. However, dilemmas arise when there is inconsistency between reason and scripture. Some believe that is we side with reason, we betray God. Others believe that if we side with traditional scripture, we betray God’s self in creation. Throughout this course, we have gained knowledge on traditional and contemporary sexul ethics in light of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. We have studied specific codes and ethics to better understand why people view sexuality in they way that they do. The constant struggle of whether to place importance on reason rather than scripture (vice versa) is something that is still discussed today. In this paper I will explore the tension between reason (and social sciences) and tradional texts (scripture) in light of the test case on same-gender sex relationships. I will then offer my critique of the article Monotheistic Ethics.
The three monotheistic religions of the West have a history of using reason to expand their moral positions on a variety of social issues (warm slavery, economics etc.). ...from the Latin word religare means to “reconnect, to bind together.” In my past, I have listened to people speaking of how religion tears people apart, turns one against another, condemning people of sins and differences. As I have learned from this class, there are problems that arise from the traditional texts of scripture. People interpret these texts in many ways. There are right and wrongs ways in how to live your life in accordance to God. The issue of same-gender sex is an essential topic in today’s world because the light of reason and science justifies the nature of same-gender sex relationships in light of monotheistic religions. As I go forward with my life, I am aware that there is much divide that arises from religion in general. However, with reason and interpretation, it gives me hope that the true meaning of religion will be fulfilled in the future.
