What Are The Similarities Between Christianity And Buddhism

A common subject has been emphasized in our readings and I feel that it is worth taking note of while comparing two great faiths of the world. The subject which has been described in our readings appears to be the subject of virtue. With two completely different faiths, it is possible to document the similarities and show why the works and teachings of these beliefs are considered sacred.

Before we compare the sacred works and teachings of Christianity and Buddhism, it is important to understand what we are working with here. In Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama (The Buddha) was born to a royal family in India in 563 BCE (VIRTUE 4.2). Buddhist texts say that Siddhartha married and had a child, but he eventually became disillusioned with palace life and the life of luxury. Themes that include morality, justice, and love can be found in both the Buddha's teachings and in the Hebrew and Christian Bible. The teachings of Buddhism and Christianity can be considered sacred because they share a basic rule of behavior which governs how people are to treat others. These teachings can only be from the works and beliefs of the sacred. In Christianity, the Golden rule states “in everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets ." (VIRTUE 4.14) I once read a Buddhist passage that compared oneself to others while stating that one should neither kill nor cause others to kill. Any work, teaching, or story, regardless of how old, regardless of whatever religion or system it belongs to, the emphasis of morality, justice, and love are traits that should be revered and practiced.
