Leaders either get two reactions from the people when they get into power. The people either love them or are scared of them or of the things they will do. Sometimes the people can love the leader but not like the things they do. In that case the citizens had expectations for the leader before they were given power, and the leader didn’t meet them. However, that happens more often than the people simply just loving the leader they elected. Leaders can be both loved and feared by the people. Mao Zedong was a Chinese communist, military commander, strategist, political philosopher and party leader. He was seen as a hero leading China to many victories and leading rebellions. Mao did what he thought was best for China but the people didn’t always agree. Mao retained his unquestionable place in the Politburo of the Communist Party of China since 1943 and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China since 1945. As a prominent leader and a veteran having fought many battles, Mao, during the Chinese Civil War, led the Communist Party of China (CPC) to a series of victories that drove the Kuomintang (KMT) and its troops to the island of Taiwan. He also proclaimed the formation of the People’s Republic of China. Mao Zedong also set up many programs including the Soviet Style Economic Program, the First Five Year Plan, and set up collecting peasant land into huge communes. Some of these things were good for the people and helped get his name out there as a good leader. However, Mao did things that were not at all good for the people. He was a mass murderer in China. When the nation was facing a famine, compared the systematic torture, brutality, starvation and killing of Chinese peasants to the Second World War in its magnitude. Kennedy took office on Jan, 20, 1961 and served until he was killed on November 22, 1963. John F. Kennedy gained the power to become president first by getting a good education and then by serving in the US Navy. He was a member of the US House of Representatives and a US Senator. He served as President from 1961 until 1963. The people liked Kennedy because he did good things to help the country out. For example, he encouraged Americans to do great things and he introduced the Peace Corps. He had a big impact on America and the world. He played a major role in the Cold War, in the arms race, civil rights movement, and Vietnam war. But Kennedy also had a dark side. As the Washington Post says, “ JFK had a dark side. The same internal fire that fueled his political success could also burn out of control”. In other words John F Kennedy did whatever he had to in order to get what he wanted. He wasn’t above bullying others and issuing threats. He risked his White House tenure, the welfare of his party, his policy goals and everyone he supposedly held dear. This was bad for the people because he made enemies. Administration was in general trying to stop the Mafia. This made him very unpopular with a very powerful foe and enemy, one that worked outside the law. This would obviously make the people scared because they now had enemy powers.
