In “ John F. Kennedy, By Alan Brinkley, an American Historian and has taught at Columbia University for over 20 years takes Kennedy’s Life and presidency in a way that other authors wouldn’t. He shows Kennedy’s real image and the failures he encountered. Brinkley does a great job putting the major and minor events of Kennedy’s life in context without unnecessarily dwelling on any topic. In this biography, Brinkley combines minor event with the major with thoroughness and straight to the point. It is difficult to think clearly about Kennedy because of the memories his name evokes, coupled with the assassination and the United States' subsequent political history. But with Brinkley's novel he explains information about Kennedy that is not mentioned and known to America. The novel, John F Kennedy by Alan Brinkley is a biography of Kennedy’s early life, military service, and presidency. Kennedy was an Irish- American and his family had an attractive and idyllic image. Early on in his life, Kennedy had 8 siblings; often time his mom was overwhelmed by having too many children and left him and his siblings to be supervised by servants and relatives. Jack (a nickname given to John F Kennedy) had the most difficult life. He had many illnesses; it made him weak and affected his everyday life. When Kennedy went to college he wrote series of thesis on England and had success in his novel “ Why England slept”. But despite his success he wanted to join the war after the news about Pearl Harbor. At this time he was still worried about his health and that it will keep him from joining. After failing all physical exams, his father Joe Kennedy helped him get another physical exam and Kennedy got into the office of naval intelligence. During and after his presidency, Kennedy was a highly charismatic, graceful figure who, in the view of many, was taking the United States in a new direction with a sense of mission and purpose. Brinkley covers Kennedy’s family, upbringing and education, noting the importance that publication of his Harvard thesis played in making a name for him, enabling him (along with his family’s money) to win a seat in Congress in 1946. Kennedy had a difficult life with illness to many hardships during his presidency. Many were overcome, daunting his future decisions. America loved Kennedy because of he was young and dynamic with a mission and purpose. Even though he was indecisive and had a slow approach, his decisions made a great impact. After his death the view of Kennedy had many uncompleted goals and tasks he wanted done for America.
How he went to war and came home to marry Jacqueline Kennedy. You learn that he had Addison’s disease, but he hid his pain from the American people. Next, the book talks about the 1960s election and how John F. Kennedy won. It was a close call though and he almost didn’t win. Then it talks about his inauguration, and it gives some of his famous quotes. One of those was “ And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you----- ask what you can do for your country”. The Bay of Pigs is talked about next in the book. It was the biggest failure of John F. Kennedy’s career. The Cuban Missile Crisis is talked about next in the book. So basically this was the most dangerous conflict of John F. Kennedy’s presidency. The Russians had missiles in Cuba pointed at the US, and the US had missiles in Turkey pointed at Russia. John F. Kennedy was able to work out a deal that had the Russians remove the missiles and promise not to invade Cuba, and while the US took their missiles out of Turkey. The account is told from Robert F. Kennedy's point of view. Kennedy was a key player in the decisions made during the thirteen days of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Kennedy believed that the United States should try and resolve The Cuban Missile Crisis peacefully and that the United States needed to try and avoid resolving to violent measures. In 1976, the US Senate ordered a fresh inquiry into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, who was murdered in 1963 during a motorcade in Dallas, Texas while campaigning for re-election. People who had been involved in the original Warren Commission investigations were asked to make fresh statements. The FBI and the CIA were persuaded to release more of their documents on Oswald. New lines of inquiry were opened and individuals who had not previously given evidence were persuaded to come forward. Most important of all, pieces of evidence such as photos and sound recordings were subjected to scientific analysis using the most up-to-date methods and equipment. The House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) completed their investigation in 1979 and they finally came to a discrete verdict that Lee Harvey Oswald fired three shots at Kennedy, one of which killed the president. A fourth shot was fired from the grassy knoll, which was contradictory to the statement printed by the Warren Commission 16 years earlier. They concluded that John Kennedy was assassinated as the result of a conspiracy.
