The Value of Management Consultancy
“A number of books over the years have criticised management consultants, and accused them of having dubious value (rubber stamping executives' existing biases, or even giving advice that destroyed value (books: “Dangerous Company: Management Consultants and the Businesses They Save and Ruin”, “Con Tricks: The Shadowy World of Management Consultancy and How to Make it Work For You”, the film “The firm” etc.)”. This statement is has been brought about by a few bad eggs in the consultancy industry which has led to wrong misconceptions being created overtime.
Management Consultancy is very important for organizations in search of innovative and fresh ways to improve and keep abreast with organisational trends and changes around the world. Consultants bring the latest skills in the in the industry relevant to an organisation, they focus on outcome and speed of delivery. Furthermore, they bring no predisposition with them, which helps to make their decision making process less biased. (Fombrun, 2004)
In this essay I will use the ADP (Accelerated Delivery Programme) at GSK and a case study from the PULSE Volunteer programme to show the positive value consultants bring to an organisation. GlaxoSmithKline also known as GSK is one of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies in the world. GSK develops and supplies drugs to improve the quality of life of people around the globe; GSK currently employs more than 97,000 people in over 100 countries.
GlaxoSmithKline is structured around five major departments/business units; the Consumer Business Unit, Pharmacy Business Unit, Research and Development Business Unit, Global Manufacturing Business Unit and Core Business Services....

Every consultant should not be tarnished with the same brush, and undergo intense bad publicity due to the actions of the past leaders in the field of consultancy. The world of business has moved along with technology since the past mistakes of inexperienced consultants, this is due to the continuous rapid advancement in technology, which requires organisations to seek the business acumen of consultants with on the hands-on experience, a skill that most consultants in the field today have. Clients now look for consultants to work on projects and want them to have knowledge as well as good people management skills in order to successfully integrate their ideas.
