Lorna Smith is the Pharmacy Manager at the Walmart Pharmacy in Kenora, Ontario. Lorna’s challenges as a manager include the current expansion in the pharmacist’s scope of practice, the change in government reimbursement for pharmacy services, the demand by consumers for better professional services and product selection, and the need for this location to be profitable. Lorna must move her team through a rapidly changing environment in order to be successful in the local competitive retail pharmacy market. As a front line manager, Lorna directly supervises other pharmacists, a pharmacy assistant, a department manager, and several sales associates. She works with the store and assistant managers to communicate weekly plans within all divisions of the store. The pharmacy district manager provides Lorna with information on budgets, wages, and corporate health and wellness programs. The regional manager, senior head office managers, and Vice President of Health and Wellness ensure that all Walmart pharmacies follow the guidelines established within the corporate framework. Although Lorna works within a specialty division of Walmart, she is influenced by a strong corporate culture. All associates (employees) hear the story of founder, Sam Walton, and are taught his three core beliefs- service to customer, respect for the individual, and strive for excellence. The Shining Star program recognizes individuals who demonstrate these values. The continued influence of Sam’s frugality is exhibited in the company’s current money saving strategies used to deal with corporate travel, suppliers, store development, and consumer purchases. By following Sam’s example, Walmart not only serves the shareholders but also the associates, c... ... middle of paper ... ...es input on each of her scheduled associates’ work, does their annual performance reviews, and hires and releases associates to serve the needs of the business. Each month, Lorna discusses the pharmacy profit and loss statement with the store manager and her entire team, and corresponds with her district manager about their plans to improve the market share. As the newest pharmacy in Kenora, Lorna must guide her team to compete with well-established pharmacies with extremely loyal customers. Lorna works hard to raise her pharmacy’s profile within Kenora in order to attract new customers. She is constantly scanning the horizon to offer new healthcare services to customers, and implement government compensated services. Lorna’s ongoing challenge is to have her entire team embrace the rapidly changing landscape of pharmacy practise with the confidence to succeed.
Mr. Walgreen knew if he was going to be successful in the pharmacy business, he had to learn as much as he could from other pharmacists. Mr. Walgreen worked a series of jobs with the top leading pharmacists named Samuel Rosenfeld, Max Grieben, William G. Valentine, and Isaac W. Blood. However, Mr. Walgreen found that these pharmacists were teaching him old fashioned complacent methods of running a drugstore. He asked himself, “where was the selection of goods that customers really wanted and what about the customer service?” Mr. Walgreen c...
There are 940 stores just in British Columbia or 10.6% of the Canadian market. The most competitive are Shoppers Drug Market and London Drugs. Shoppers Drug Market makes up 31.8% of the whole Canadian market, so we figured we should look into a smaller city in order to eliminate a high number of competition. We selected Fort St. John, BC because according to the city website, it is the biggest and secondest fastest growing city in the province. It does have drugstore pharmacies in the area, but we could not find any that offer 24 hour service, which would make us stand out. As of now, it has over 21,000 people that make an average annual income of $69,001.10. Young couples with children make up most of the population. In comparison, the target market for Walgreens in the US is women 25 to 54 years old with two children and an average annual income of $48,000. We believe Walgreens has potential in Fort St. John because this “energetic city” is flourishing at such a high
Wal-mart is currently the world’s largest company. It has seen continuous growth and financial success since it was founded in 1962. Today it is living off of a previous reputation of solid ethical business practices that are no longer being exercised. Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-mart, was considered to be “freakishly cheap… Cost-cutting was an obsession in the Wal-mart culture… on business trips, everyone, including the boss, flew coach, and hotel rooms were always shared.” (reclaimdemocracy.org. 2006). This was only part of the reason for Sam Walton’s success.
Walgreens was founded in 1901 and provides convenient access to consumer goods and services, pharmacy, health and wellness services (Walgreens.com). Walgreens has a conglomerate diversification business strategy which means they expand not only in pharmacy services but unrelated businesses such as health care clinics and in some areas Walgreens hosts 800 E.V. chargers. This type of business strategy helps to minimize risks due to fluctuations in one industry (Bateman, Snell 85). This type of corporate strategy is working very well for the Walgreens organization. The ability to service customer’s needs in a variety of needs is significant to a successful business. The Mission of Walgreens, “To be the most trusted, convenient multichannel provider and advisor of innovative pharmacy, health and wellness solutions, and customer goods and services in communities across America. A destination where health and happiness come together to help people get well, stay well and live well,” (Walgreens.com). This mission statement can be seen throughout the organization. The front line clerks are exceptionally helpful when a customer needs to locate an item, as well as the pharmacy staff explaining the directions of prescriptions to the patients.
Wal-Mart is the world’s largest retailer, operating more than 5800 discount stores. Wal-Mart employs more than 1.5 million associates 885,000 in the United States and 225,000 internationally. Walton had a reputation for caring about his customers, his employees, and the community. In order to maintain its market position in the discount retail business, Wal-Mart executives continue to adhere to the management guidelines Sam developed. Walton was a man of simple tastes and took a keen interest in people. He believed in three guiding principles: 1.Customer value and service; 2.Partnership with its associates; 3.Community involvement.
As a student in SDSU’s pharmacy program one of the activities required to prepare us for real world pharmacy practice would be to shadow a staff pharmacist at the Jackrabbits pharmacy on the SDSU campus. I have had previous work experience in a community pharmacy and there are some unique features which makes Jackrabbits pharmacy stick out.
Everyday, I first walking through the door of pharmacy, I saw a front counter on the right where pharmacist and pharmacy technician communicated with patients and MCH health care employees through the window. This is where pharmacist and pharmacy technicians also gave medications to patients and MCH healthcare employees. Then, there is a section for inhalers and eyes medications on the left and it’s

Since I have been worked in Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, I was not surprised with the work load and the hospital setting at Millcreek Community Hospital (MCH). With a goal of enrichment my knowledge in a hospital pharmacy setting, I am enthusiastic in accomplishing the assigned duties. I have very high expectation during these four weeks of IPPE rotation; I expect to learn beyond what I already know in the past and apply what I learn during the past year in to pharmacy practice. Arriving at Millcreek Community Hospital, I was not surprised the pharmacy's setting in hospital but I'm surprised the different types of work I received. At Veteran Affairs Medical Center, all I ever did are filling the prescriptions, stocking, and managed automated machines but at MCH,
It would be an understatement to say that Walmart is a big company. In fact, Walmart is the largest corporation in the world with sales 2.2 million employees and over 11,000 stores as of 2014 (Our History.) How is it that a business that began with one store has been able to grow to such great proportions? Much of this success and growth can be attributed to Walmart founder, Sam Walton (1918-1992). His seemingly simple business model has revolutionized retail and even earned him a Medal of Freedom from President H. W. Bush (Our History.) This man’s influence on Walmart is unmistakable, and his values still stand as the model of the company.

Administration is a support activity that is important to the entire value chain because it consists of many activities, including finance, accounting, legal, quality, and importantly information systems. As the pharmacy retail industry, information systems will certainly help the retail backward to its suppliers, demand forecasting and planning, inventory management, operating stores, and distributing information to the customers. Walgreens has seen the importance of this support activity and provided necessary support services, such as information technology, legal, construction, and facilities maintenance, as well as professional services that enhance Walgreens overall business operation and efficient execution ("Social Responsibility,"

On November 26, 2013, I had the pleasure of shadowing Mrs. Jackie Becks, a registered pharmacist at CVS Pharmacy in Bellevue, Ohio. The six hours of shadowing seemed to go by very quickly and was very enjoyable. Mrs. Becks graduated from the Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy. She has been in the profession for at least two decades.
