The social norm that I violated was the idea of only women wearing makeup. This norm acts as social control because it creates an expectation that women must be perfect and look perfect at all times to fit men’s likings. It is also a distinguisher between birth genders, as makeup adds a “feminine” look to the wearer. To violate this normal I will wear makeup on my face during the school day. I expected to receive a variety of reactions anywhere from hostility and uncomfortability to acceptance and respect. But I had predicted the major reaction would be discomfort. As previously stated the place where this took place was South Western High School during a school day. I observed the reactions of students as well as teachers as I walked through …show more content…
But I increasingly grew more confident as the day went on. I felt the way I did at first because I was fearful for the way people would perceive me for wearing the makeup and of the conclusions that they would draw about me. But as I discovered people who supported me I began to feel more confident in the position I was in. It certainly helped me relate to the struggles and ridicule others must endure for simply being themselves, struggles much more intense and complex than simply wearing makeup to gain some extra credit points. This was truly a life changing experience and one that I will hopefully never forget. People did react as I had hypothesized, some much more extreme than I would have ever imagined. Many were uncomfortable and confused, but some become hostile and disgusted. This was a reaction I didn’t expect to receive. It was “difficult” at times to see how a simple layer of makeup could completely alter people’s opinions of me. It was hard to realize that something so minute and pointless could cause rage and animosity. It made it very difficult to imagine the struggles other deal with daily. This assignment helped me to realize how ingrained norms are in our society. These norms are so important to follow for people that it causes them to lash out at those who defy them. Norms are a very powerful force many people find
There are many things that influence our behavior from internal influences to social norms. Social norms are implicit or explicit rules that govern how we behave in society (Maluso, class notes). Social norms influence our behavior more than any of us realize but we all notice when a norm has been broken. Breaking a social norm is not an easy task and often leads us feeling uncomfortable whether we broke the norm ourselves or witnessed someone else breaking it. Sometimes however, you just have to break a norm to see what happens.
What is beauty? How do human beings decide who is attractive and who is not? Society is full of messages telling us what is beautiful, but what are those definitions based on? Do we consciously decide whom we are attracted to, or is biology somehow involved? The issue of beauty and how we define it has been studied for centuries. Scholars from all fields of study have searched for the "formula" for beauty. Darwin in his book The Descent of Man wrote, "It is certainly not true that there is in the mind of man any universal standard of beauty with respect to the human body. It is however, possible that certain tastes in the course of time become inherited, though I have no evidence in favor of this belief." (1) Science has tried to look at beauty beyond the conscious level. It has tried to determine what roles biology plays in human attraction. Scientists have discovered that symmetry and scent play a role in defining human attraction. (3) But while this can begin to explain beauty on the most basic of levels, what accounts for variations in the standard of beauty? The idea of beauty varies within different societies and communities. Do these cultural preferences have a biological basis? What is the relationship between biology and society in relation to the idea of beauty? How do they relate to each other, and how do they differ? In particular what role does science play in the preference that many societies, (in particular South Asian, East Asian, and North American Cultures), have for fairer skin?
While trying to break the movie theater norm, it was difficult for me to pick movies with a different variety of people and movies that were a little older so less people would be attending them. I also had a little trouble when it came to answering the phone and waiting for the other person to talk first. The problem with this one was that I had to wait for people to actually call me, which doesn't happen that often in this day and age anymore. To conclude, these social norms forced people to be in uncomfortable situations and make a decision as to how they would react to it.
... day. The hardest part of the experiment was going against social psychology; it was very uncomfortable going against the social norms. We also found that it was difficult to match all of our schedules to be able to do the experiment all together when the gym was full. Overall the experiment taught us that social norms have molded society to believe that they should restrain their original thoughts and actions when in a public place. Lastly, individuals should not disturb other social norms that occur within the range of accepted actions, especially in the area of clothing.

The human body is one of the most complex and yet beautiful things on the earth. We live in a time where our perception of the way we view the body is driven my social stereotypes. In todays world we are supposed to live by the standards of this unwritten code. All of this affects the quality of life we live in. It ranges from the workplace; our personal relationships to the way strangers perceive a person. At this very day in age we are categorized due to being born male or female and things that should be talked about are considered taboo to others.
Government regulation on food, drinks and medicine has created safer products for public use. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is constantly working hard at making sure that the food and medicine produced and sold by corporations are safe for public health and are produced in an ethical manner. Food and pharmaceutical corporations are forced to follow strict guidelines so that their products are allowed to be sold in the United States. Much of the public doesn’t realize that the Food and Drug Administration is also in charge of regulating the cosmetics that are sold within the United States. However, unlike food and drugs, cosmetics companies are loosely regulated and given a greater freedom to produce items they choose. Various cosmetics have been found to contain ingredients that are harmful to the public health or the environment.
Concealers are considered to be color correctors. The purpose of concealers is to mask dark circles, age spots, and blemishes that are seen on the skin. It is thicker than foundation, and it has different pigments. It does this by blending around the skin. Concealers are applied after the primer and before the foundation on the face. Using concealers and foundations make the skin more even toned based on its color. Concealers have more pigments in them. It can be found in the liquid or solid form. Foundation is normally put on larger areas. Women can use concealers by itself or with foundations. Concealers are available from the lightest and deepest shades. Women have a tendency to choose shades lighter than their skin tone to hide blemishes and dark circles under the eye. Some of the colors give the natural skin tone, while others are used to contrast with a blemish. Concealers that have yellow undertones hide dark circles. The colors green and blue counteracts red patches on the skin-like pimples, broken veins, or rosacea. Concealers that are purple make the complexions look brighter. Colored concealers are applied a little bit beneath a concealer or foundation to match the female’s skin tone. Concealers that are skinned toned are sufficient at covering up imperfections. All young girls in America can remember watching the movie Beauty and the Beast by Walt Disney. At that time, it was a story of love and triumph, a girl falls in love and gets her prince charming. As we grow older, we question that movie and its intentions that we were too young to understand. Who is the real beauty and who is the real beast? A puzzling question due to our society constantly telling us how we need to look and be perceived as in order to not be “the beast” and more of “the beauty”.
For this assignment Amy and I chose cosmetics and toiletries. A cosmetic is a preparation or substance that is used to alter certain parts of the human body it can change the odours or appearance of the body, clean it or protect it. Some of the items in this industry that are included in the description of the cosmetics and toiletries industry are hair care products, makeup, bath, shower and skin care products, fragrances, male grooming products, oral hygiene products, female sanitary items, deodorant and moisturizer and other cream. After several attempts at researching where cosmetics are produced and manufactured, we found that is very rare for most makeup and toiletry brands to be made in Australia after calling and enquiring to many different companies we found that most products are shipped from America or the UK. However, we did find that Procter and Gamble produces Billie goat soap in Australia and all of Lush’ products are manufactured in Canterbury in Sydney.
in shock and horror as her eyes were literally eaten away as though by acid.
Make-up is, in my opinion, a way to express yourself and to enhance your outer beauty. All woman are beautiful, in our own special ways. No woman necessarily NEEDS make-up; it’s something we like to do to feel good about ourselves, at least for me. Being raised around women, who always strived to look their best, influenced me in a way I will always appreciate. My 74-year old Grandmother, Mamaw is what I call her, still enjoys applying her make-up and fixing her hair before she goes anywhere; it’s adorable. If you ask her, “Who are you trying to impress?” Her response is always, “Myself.”
Cosmetics are defined by the statement, "a product applied to the body, especially the face, to improve its appearance." Are women too reliant on cosmetics to improve their self-image? Cosmetics are a major factor in millions of lives whether that be from self-confidence to make up for a play. As the years go by cosmetics continue to improve on efficiency and availability. Dating back to ancient Rome the term cosmetics was used differently. They simply used it as a way to mask body odor by covering themselves in perfume (Chaudhri, 164). The use of cosmetic products have evolved drastically.
Like it or not, a person is judged by their appearance and the way they carry themselves. Appearance is directly related to a person’s character because some details of personal affectations tell much about one’s identity. Every person’s identity depends on their family and their race. As a book can never be judged by its cover, in the same way, a person cannot be judged by their appearance, identity, or ethnicity. There are 197 countries in this world, but every country’s traditions and beliefs are different from each other. Ethnicity, race, and sex play a large part in forming traditions and beliefs, which is why they are so different around the world. A person’s identity is based on their family, culture and personal interests, which are all the factors that tend to shape how people are seen in a community. When an individual is judged based on their appearance instead of their character, they often suffer rejection. Everyone in this world has a different identity and is different from each other. Cultures and traditions differentiate people and help
