Makenna, Mckenna, or even Mackenna all mean the same thing: wise, trustworthy, and imaginative. This uncommon names origin is Scottish, Irish, and Hawaiian. However, my dad hadn’t known all of these facts when he picked it. There wasn’t any research involved, only a movie. Both of my parents were watching Somewhere In Time at a cramped movie theater filled with frigid air. As the film began, a character Mckenna was introduced into the movie. The name dazzled inside of my dad's mined, never hearing of such a creative name. With baby names to decided from, and my due birth date only being a couple months away, my parents both knew it would be the one. Until the fourth grade, I felt normal, seeing how many people had bizarre looking names; the second to last year of beginners school, I felt cropped out of the picture. Everyone had well-liked names while I was stuck with my oddly spelt, confused looking name. At the same time, though, the appearance gave me a sense of the vivid sun moving in with the hot pink, peach sky behind the elevated green trees. The aroma gave me a reminder of the light, crisp lavender smell of a bright lilac tulip. When sensing taste, the gooey marshmallow from a crumbly s'more, stuck on top of a spiked stick. The athlete I chose is Natasha Watley. She is a professional softball player and the first African-American female to play on the USA softball team in the Olympics. She’s a former collegiate 4-time First Team All-American who played for the UCLA Bruins, the USA Softball Women’s National Team, and for the USSSA Pride. She helped the Bruins will multiple championships and also holds numerous records and one of the few players to bat at least .400 with 300 hits, 200 runs, and 100 stolen bases. She’s also the career hits leader in the National Pro Fast pitch. She won the gold medal in the 2004 summer Olympics and a silver in the Beijing Olympics. Lillia Davidson, my grandma was born mid war, 1940 to Shirley and Ed Kittle. Lillia, her 2 siblings and their parents lived in a small apartment in Glenbrook, Connecticut from 1940 to 1943, her family moved to the Vermont countryside when she was four. Her parents were not rich Shirley was a seamstress and Ed did was was called a civilian job meaning he did not get paid, he would keep an eye out for suspicious plains. Though her dad was not in the war she felt proud that he was helping with the war. Ed’s job of being a spotter become very important after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. My grandma has no memory of Pearl Harbor because she was so young. Being so young sheltered her from a lot of what was going on at that time.

One of the most striking parts of the novel Sugar, by Bernice L. McFadden is her choice of names, especially that of the main character, Sugar. McFadden chooses a name that was unconventional for the time period and remains unconventional today. Not only is there significance in the name Sugar, but the names Pearl and Mercy also have deeper meanings intentionally chosen by the author to further expand upon their roles as characters within the setting of the novel. Each of these three character’s names represent a persona that can be applied outside of the constraints of the novel.
