1. Bethany Hamilton is a teenager who lives in Kauai, Hawaii with her parents Tom and Cheri, and two older brothers. All are surfers, but Bethany has grown up with a desire for surfing and enters several competitions. In 2003, while Tom goes to the hospital for knee surgery, both of the girls go surfing with Alana's father and brother. As Bethany dangles her left arm in the water, a shark bites it off near the shoulder.

The arm is cosmetically perfect and has flexible joints, but Bethany irately rejects it when she learns it is not weight-bearing. The ambush of publicity also proves to be a great strain on her. After her incident, she became more positive because it motivated her to get better in surfing, build up her character, and set an example to kids to put in hard work so they can overcome the impossible.

Tom’s, Bethany’s father, confidence in his daughter's instincts is proven when she is the only one to sense a big wave forming, and she alone paddles out. Her mother and friend always encouraged to overcome these rough challenges, give her positive thoughts, and believed in her the whole way.

But then, Bethany’s friends and family were there for her and provided support on her recovery process. So she put in all her energy and time to train and get better than she was ever before. After the surf competition, she felt very proud and happy of herself because all her hard work and dedication paid
