Lillia Davidson, my grandma was born mid war, 1940 to Shirley and Ed Kittle. Lillia, her 2 siblings and their parents lived in a small apartment in Glenbrook, Connecticut from 1940 to 1943, her family moved to the Vermont countryside when she was four. Her parents were not rich Shirley was a seamstress and Ed did was was called a civilian job meaning he did not get paid, he would keep an eye out for suspicious plains. Though her dad was not in the war she felt proud that he was helping with the war. Ed’s job of being a spotter become very important after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. My grandma has no memory of Pearl Harbor because she was so young. Being so young sheltered her from a lot of what was going on at that time. As the world was spiraling into a ball of hate and Hitler’s power grew the world was affected. When her mother would take her in to town to go shopping they would see signs in the windows of shops that said “No Jews”. Shirley explained that sometimes people would see others as “bad” just because they had a different religion or sometimes because they looked different. Her memory of this conversation is so clear becouse she could not rap her head around the idea of prejudiuse. They would run around the block from the time the sun came out until her mom would call her for dinner. Her best friend Kajsa lived a few doors down in the same apartment building they would roller skate up and down the street, back and forth for hours. Her and Kajsa would run to the school yard and peek through the fence and the older kids playing but because Kajsa was jewish the older kids would throw rocks at them yelling “get out-a here jew”, Kajsa would cry, just like my grandma was sheltered from the full truth and did not completely understand why she was treated
