Throughout the book, Freak the Mighty, author Rodman Philbrick creates a valuable lesson for three main characters; Freak, Max, and Loretta Lee, that one should not judge another person based on appearance; looks can be deceiving. For example, Loretta Lee at the beginning of her introduction in the book she was judged as the old beer drinking lady and possibly scary. But in reality she came through and saved Max from Killer Kane, Max’s Father, from Freak the Mighty. Another example is, people will judge Freak on his appearance because his body structure is smaller than most humans and looks very weird. In addition, Max is judge by the people around him because he is very large in size and looks like a giant but is kind on the inside. One's …show more content…
Also, he had received a nickname during daycare Kicker.“‘Hey you! Mutt and Jeff! Frankenstein and Igor! Don’t look around, I’m talking to you, boneheads. What is this, a freak show?’”(Philbrick 29). Tony D is the one who said this quote. He and his gang ganged up on Freak and Max at the carnival and of which they ended up in the millpond. Even though Max may seem like a giant, but he is very kind hearted and cares for everyone around him. For example, when Freak dies, Max runs through everyone he sees just to get to Freak. If a doctor was in his way they would have been crushed. Metaphorically of course. Another example is when Loretta Lee was being strangled Max save her by throwing himself onto his Father. Loretta Lee was also judged by her appearance in the book. Loretta's introduction began in the chapter “Damsel in Distress” of Freak the Mighty. “Now she’s standing in the doorway, this scrawny, yellow-haired with small, hard eyes and blurry red lips.”(Philbrick 65). The book also mentions that she is a heavy beer drinker and cigarette smoker as well. Loretta Lee may seem like an untrustworthy poor old lady who probably smells like beer and cigarette smoke, but in the end when Max gets captured

Imagine that you have to decide which of your parents you're going to side with. Ashleigh has to make this decision in the book Ashes by Susan Beth Pfeffer. Her parents are divorced and she has to decide whether or not to steal money from her mom to give to her Dad. Her Dad wants to get the 200 dollars because he's in debt.Ashleigh would most likely not take the money from her mons tea pot because her dad is irresponsible, Ashleigh is dubious about stealing, and she doesn't want to get in trouble.
An example of their adventures is when Kevin mouths at Tony D. and his gang, defending Max and himself; after of which he discovers that Max could not have fought Tony and incredulously questions, “You mean you couldn’t take him and I was giving him lip?” (31). Kevin’s words reveal his trust in Max. He incited Tony, believing Max would be able to protect the both of them. The boys’ next conflict, an encounter with Iggy, the head of a troublemaking motorcycle gang, and Loretta, his wife, show Max’s concern for Kevin and his wanting to keep Kevin safe: “I feel real bad for Freak because he hated it when people try to rub his head for luck, but I don’t say a word, I just run us home, thumping the short way back around the pond, and my big feet never trip me up because I’m on automatic, I’m this running machine” (72). Max is very attuned and sensitive to Kevin’s feelings, an important quality in a friendship. Also, his desire to protect Kevin and keep him away from Iggy and Loretta prevent his clumsiness from impeding his speedy progress to home. The conflicts Freak the Mighty encounter prove the boys’ undeniable teamwork and
There is no doubt that Miss. Strangeworth is not an easy person to deal with, let alone live with, and although her character is fictional, there are many people with the same personality. We can tell quite easily that she is a very meticulous woman, with a lot of perfectionist tendencies, a few of which are to nitpick people’s lives and make sure that even the most minute detail is up to her standards. I know of someone with these attributes and as difficult as they are to deal with, with their list of requirements to be met and their eagle-eye for detail in even the smallest things, they mean the best, and are always trying to help, despite the possible repercussions.
The character of Max Kane is first described as dumb, tall, and kicker . If we were to judge him solely on his appearance, we might assume that he is this tall, Big guy that instead of talking out his issues or problems he hits people or kicks them. In fact, when Max was first introduced, he would hit people in preschool, he vented games like kick boxing, kick keens, kick face, kick teachers, and kick the other little day care critters. This shows that he isn’t the friendly person and he’s hard to get along with. Max also had a thing about hitting anyone who dares to touch him.
Before he met Freak, he was miserable. He got bad grades, and was called kicker because whoever did something to him, he would reward them with a powerful and painful kick. He also had a very low self esteem, and would just stay in his basement would rarely go out of the house because he literally had no friends, and many enemies. But that was until he met freak. He admired him for all of his intelligence, and would go outside more. He looked up at Freak for having the will to live, although he had many disadvantages. If Max had never given Freak a chance at showing who he is, then Max’s dad would have gotten away with 2 more deaths (Max, an Loretta), and Max never would have made a positive change. But the biggest change that Max made ever since he met Freak, was that he put things into perspective, and didn’t just recklessly do stuff that would get him into trouble. That's why Freak was one of the most important things that came into Max’s life, which caused him to change throughout the
It is a type of insecurity that one chooses whether or not to reveal to others. No matter how normal or abnormal that person is, they will have skeletons in the closet. Freak Show is a good example of showing how a community filled with so many different people all have a past and something they may not be proud of. For instance, Elsa Mars, a very steadfast independent woman, took on the role as ringleader and mother figure of her freaks. She had a persuasive way that captivated everyone she came in contact with especially when it came to her baggage. Because she had been at the freak show for so many years, and it was always understood that Elsa was normal with no deformity, it came as a shock to her freak family when her baggage was revealed that she had wooden legs. This proved to the freaks that even the most flawless-looking people have
When an individual unintentionally enters a room full of an unfamiliar crowd, he or she is bound to be embarrassed, but also have an apprehensive sensation of how others in that room will distinguish them. A situation like that establishes a moment in which that person realizes that all eyes are gaping at that individual. Just when that person could consider forgetting what just happened, unfortunately judgments start circulating among the unfamiliar crowd. As most people know, judgments are based off of a person’s appearance, race, religion, or a quality that doesn’t appeal to the person analyzing them. Obviously, judging is something that takes place whether someone likes it or not, but there are certain limits to it that many cross by adding
Freak the Mighty is about a strong bond between two boys. The movie version The Mighty shows a lot of Max and Freaks adventures. The book Freak the Mighty has many differences with its movie adaptation The Mighty, including how they met, Max’s kidnapping, and Freaks death.
In our 6th Grade class we are reading Freak the Mighty. In chapter 1 through 16 we learned about Max and Freaks friendship. In chapter one we learned about Max’s life. In chapter two we read how Max and Freak saw each other. Freak greeted him with a Identify yourself earthling. And DIE EARTHLING! Chapter three talks how Max helps Freak get a kite out of a tree. He helps him because he saw Freak hitting the tree with his little crutch. He goes with Freak to his place and talk. When the Fair Gwen finds out that Freak is at Max’s Houses she goes and gets him. She looks frightened that Freak was at Max’s House. In the next few chapters Max goes over to Freaks and Talks to him and goes on “Quests” with him. They also go to a park to watch the fireworks on Fourth of July. In chapters 11 through 16 The Fair Gwen enrolls Max in Freak’s Smart Classes. And the students are bothering him with “Killer Kane, Killer Kane had a kid who got no brain” Few days after Freak starts to eat lots of American Chop Suey and then starts to choke and the teachers call an ambulance. They take him to the hospital and check him out. In Christmas eve Freak gives him a Dictionary with his favorite words. Then Killer Kane kidnaps Max and takes him to the Testaments.
“Appearances are not held to be a clue to the truth. But we seem to have no other”. This quote was spoken by Ivy Compton-Burnett which states that we tend to have a belief that appearances are what define a persons self and as to who we see them as. We don’t take into consideration that they can be anything or anyone else regardless of their image. An example of a misjudged stereotype based on appearance would be characters of giants in all sorts of media. Hearing the word giant, many form a mental image of a very large, intimidating being who has a disfigured stature with repulsive characteristics. That mental image leads many to label giants as unintelligent, slow and aggressive beings. The filmmakers of Big Fish, Jack the Giant Slayer, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix were under that same belief that the appearance of giants are what label them as unintelligent and aggressive beings. Intelligence is defined by the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills, and the ideology based on prejudice or discrimination against any real, fictional or mythical race of beings of superhuman size and possessing superhuman capabilities is known as Giantisim. The filmmakers are Giantists based on their negative representation of giants in their films.
Now a day, people make assumptions of other things based solely on appearance. What people wear, how they look, the covers of books, the titles of movies and even brand names are an example of this expression. People believe that by simply looking at something or someone by the outside will give them all the necessary information to find out how that person or object really is. This expression is well used when describing people. Every so often, people are judged solely based on their appearance. We can easily get the wrong fir...
When Max was younger, in daycare, he tended to “talk with his fists”, punching and kicking other children as he pleased. This was most likely a gene passed down from his father, with Kenny Kane’s violent ways. Once Grim and Gram took over parenting, it was clear that Max learned to control himself, or had become controlled by them. Either that, or his mother’s

Hook: Two men walk into a store. One is dressed in a three-quarter black business suit; his hair is gelled back and he stands in a confident pose as he stares ahead. While the other man looks downward, his hands in his baggy gray sweatshirt and he smells of alcohol. How people portray themselves can cause stereotypes and judgments to be formed within a blink of an eye. A person may read in the newspaper the next day on how a store was robbed and instantly think it was the suspicious looking man, the one with the baggy clothes. Why is this? Humans and people, in general, have always based their perceptions on people for what they look like. This all has to do with the media and social influences on how an image is made to be relevant.
