Effective leadership qualities are critical in a well-rounded and civilized society. Charisma, intelligence, and authority are all crucial components of an effective leader. None of the leaders portrayed in Lord of the Flies possess all of the characteristics of an effective leader. This does not mean that they aren’t good leaders, it means that they aren’t effective leaders. Three characters emerge as leaders in this novel. Each character is a good leader in their own way. The first leader to come to light is Ralph. It is immediately evident that Ralph will be the leader of the stranded boys. The reader accepts Ralph as the leader due to his charismatic attitude. It isn’t until the second half of the book that jack becomes the leader of the group. Jack has a different agenda than everyone else. His main concern is surviving and could care less about being rescued. When Jack forms his own group apart from Ralph’s his main priority is to kill pigs. Eventually his urge to kill overtakes him and his group, causing savagery among the group. Jack gains respect from the boys by turning the island into a dictatorship, Jack instills in his followers that Ralph is a poor leader and that they need to annihilate him. This type of behavior demonstrated by Ralph leads to the death of two boys on the island. Simon and Piggy. Each leader in Lord of the Flies expresses a different characteristic of an effective leader. Ralph is a charismatic person who has a good set of morals and is looking out of the good of the group. Piggy, who isn’t accepted as a leader by the group uses his intelligence and Ralph to guide the group. Jack uses his authority to control the group to do whatever he wants. Alone this leaders amount to nothing, but if you out Ralph’s charisma, Piggy’s intelligence and wisdom, and Jack’s authority together, an effective leader may
