There are basic things human beings need. These include food, water, and shelter. Three simple necessities people really cannot live without. Although, perhaps there is something more than those three simple words. Perhaps there is more to life than just that. This one word is simple to say but complex to obtain. Love. Human beings can’t thrive without love. Without love, one feels isolated, unwanted, and is hurt deeply. One can survive without it; but will their life truly be happy? One can be surrounded by people but still feel alone. Many people experience this in their day-to-day life. In the book, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn written by Betty Smith, isolation is portrayed in the main character Francie. “’I am not a happy man. I got a wife and children and don’t happen to be a hard-working man. I never wanted a family!’ Again the hurt around Francie’s heart” (pg 34). Francie’s father admits to not wanting a family, which is why he is never home and drinks. This makes Francie feel alone because she turns to her father for love since her mother doesn’t love her. Francie does not get to experience this as well. “I need someone. I need to hold somebody close. And I need more than this holding. I need someone to understand how I feel at a time like now” (pg 356). Francie does not feel needed throughout the whole story. She endures a lot of struggles and challenges, which she has to go through with nobody by her side. This teaches Francie a very important life lesson. She will never treat her children that same way. She knows how it feels to be unwanted and knows the importance of being loved. Francie would be an extremely happy person if all she got was the sense of being wanted and a little love. Love is
